I was trying a new restore point and the OS disabled my installed Avast antivirus.
I went back to the windows control trying a number of options and restarts to no avail.
Noted all this time I was never connected to Internet.
What am I doing wrong?

Hello aisea,

Try this;
Go to Control Panel > Add Remove programs, select 'Avast Anti-Virus' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If that does not help, uninstall, reboot, install again, reboot once more.
