Hello,

When I started with this issue, I could not get to the normal desktop due to so many pop up about security. I booted into Safe Mode and installed Malwarebytes and was able to scan with it from there. After several scannings and removals, I was able to get back to the normal desktop and run Rkill and Malwarebytes . Now, Malwarebytes shows my computer as infected with elmdslo.sys, and indentifies it as a root kit.

However, Malwarebytes can not seem to remove it. I see the rootkit listed after a running Rkill and scanning with Malwarebytes,. However, after selecting the rootkit in the show results box and clicking remove, I get unable to remove elmdslo.sys please reboot to complete removal. After reboot I do not get any message that the rootkit was removed. I run Rkill again and rescan, only to get the same results in Malwarebytes again.

Another observation is, Windows Security Center is turned off, and when I attempt to start it I get the error message that the service is unavailable. Windows Firewall is indicated as on in the Control Panel applet. I can browse the internet without redirection, download and install programs without issue, and autoupdates semms to beworking also.. I think I got rid of several trojans and fake anti-virus programs with the initial scans, but now the rootkit remains. I did all the prework . The DDS txt is as follows:

Hello Victim,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Please copy the contents of the code box below, open notepad and paste it there. On the top toolbar in notepad select file, then save as. In the box that opens type in remservice.bat for the file name. Right below that click the down arrow in the line for "save as" and select all files. Save this to your desktop and close notepad.

CODE
@echo off
sc stop elmdslo
sc delete elmdslo
del remservice.bat
EXIT

Locate the remservice icon on your desktop and double click it. A box will pop up briefly on your screen and disappear, this is normal.

NOTICE: This file was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine.
Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system

2.
Go to Start > My Computer
Go to Tools > Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Untick the following:
  • Hide extensions for known file types
  • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
Make sure this option is selected:
  • Show hidden files and folders
Click Apply and then click OK

3.
Use Windows Explorer to find and delete these files:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\elmdslo.sys

As an example:
To delete C:\WINDOWS\badfile.dll
Double click the My Computer icon on your Desktop. Or click on the Windows KEY + E.
Double click on Local Disc (C:\)
Double click on the Windows folder,
Right click on badfile.dll and then from the menu that appears, click on Delete

Reboot your machine

4.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

Things to include in your next reply:
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Thank you for your very well written and clear instructions. I followed all of your instructions, but the was unable to delecte elmdslo.sys in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers directory. Re-ran the bat file again and still could not delete the file. Got a dialog box with the message "Cannot read from the source file or disk".

I continued with your instructions anyway and ran ComboFix, it ran sucessfully, and generated a log as follows:

I seem to have Windows Security back, and am able to turn the varies features off and on. ComboFix seems to have been very sucessful. As far how the computer is running, IE is hanging, and not responding intermittenly, works most of the time. Looking forward to your opinion.

Again, thank you very much for your assistance.

Hello,

We still have some cleanup to do.

1.
We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

2.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Things to include in your next reply:
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Hello fireman4it

Just a couple of items I think I need to mention first. Windows Defender is turned off by group policy, so I could not make any configuration changes to it. It is off anyway. Also,I got a message box when running ComboFix that there was an upgrade, and did I want to upgrade. I selected no, and continued with running ComboFix. Probably not worth mentioning.

Here is the log:

Hello,

If Combofix asks to be updated please do so.

Yes that would be ok. Let's wait till we get you all clean though first. Also you should only have 1 Antivirus at a time as they may cause problems with each other and your machine.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
Folder::
c:\users\Jay\AppData\Roaming\Your PC Protector
c:\users\Jay\AppData\Roaming\lowsec

Rootkit::
c:\users\Jay\AppData\Roaming\Your PC Protector
c:\users\Jay\AppData\Roaming\Your PC Protector\Your PC Protector.exe
c:\users\Jay\AppData\Roaming\lowse

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please update MalwareBytes and do a Full scan and post that log

3.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You can refer to this short video by: neomage
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

4.
Adobe Reader Update Installation:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

5.
Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Things to include in your next reply::

============= FINISH: 12:47:53.32 ===============

Uploaded the Attach as well, didn't ask but did it anyway. Adobe and Jave updated also. Computer seems to be running fine, but Windows Defender is turn off by group policy??
IE failed once while I was updating Java for some reason. I was able to restart it right away though. Looking real good.

Hope all the logs show things are well, ESET found something I think, but reading the logs is your expertise. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thanks,
Everready

Hello, everready.
Congratulations! You now appear clean! specool.gif

Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

<Notice the space between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
"This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

We need to enable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and check Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you check this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  1. Install and maintain an outbound firewall
  2. Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  3. Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  4. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  5. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    1. Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    2. Click "All Programs"
    3. Click "Windows Update"
    4. On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    5. Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    6. Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    7. Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    8. Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    9. Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  6. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  7. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.

Thanks for the help. Most everthing is running normally, except Windows Defender. When I open Windows Defender from Start Programs, I get a message that Windows Defender is turn off by group policy. It says to contact System Administartor to enable Windows Defender. Can you help me find the group policy the message is speaking about, and do you know why it would be turned off ?

Again, thank you for the help.

Regards,

Everready

Hello,

Is this your computer? Are you logged on as an Administrator?

The computer belongs to my sister, but her account is an Administrator account. I thought that maybe the root-kit had defeated Windows Defender by turning it off through group policy. On another note, the computer came with a 6 months per installed version of Norton Internet Security, and maybe it came from the factory with Windows Defender disabled. I just guessing. I would like to change the group policy to allow Windows Defender to run if possible.

Thanks,

Everready

Hello,

You shouold be able to right click and run as administrator then change it to start up at system start. In your logs it shows it set to run at startup everytime. You could always uninstall it through Add/Remove Programs then reinstall it.
You will have to make sure you right click the uninstaller and run as Administrator.

You can download a new copy of Windows Defender here

Uninstalling A Program Through "add/remove"

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Windows Defender

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

Let me know how it goes.

Thank you for your response, even on Mothers Day you are helping people out.

I installed MS Security Essentials, and Windows Security Center stop popping up and telling me that there were security issues with the system. As for Windows defender, it does show up in start ups, but has been disabled through group policy. Whether I can re enable / reinstall it or not is not an issue any more since Security Essentials has made Window Security Center happy.

I have also installed Spywareblaster, and Vista service packs 1 and 2 so far. Plan on also installing Spybot Search & Destroy soon. Using a host file to block ad, banners, and such sound like a good idea, but having to reset DNS sound like to much trouble. I have several more updates to install and then I'll give the laptop back to my sister. So. again thank you for your time and effort, I think everything now is OK.

Regards,
Everready
