Hi, photosolo.

Highlight then right click > copy the following line:
C:\WINDOWS\INF

Now, click the start button on the taskbar, then click Run....
Paste the line you copied into the Run... box and click ok

The folder containing ie.inf should open.
Right click ie.inf and choose install.

Did that help?

Hi there
I just tried what you said but for what ever reason there is no "ie.inf" file.?.

I'll write below all the file beggining with ie in the inf folder;

ie 53 kb
ie.pnf 82 kb
ieaccess 1 kb
ieaccess.pnf 5 kb
iereset 3 kb
iereset.pnf 6 kb
iesetup 11 kb

i tried right clicking install on the "ie" file, and then i got a files needed pop up stating;

"the file IEXPLORE.EXE on windows XP Professional service pack 2cd is needed.
Type the path where the file is located and then click ok."

im sure this might make sence to you, if you can help it would be much appreciated.
many thanks
Dan

Do you have an original xp sp2 install cd?

We can try the system file checker to repair IE, but it will probably ask you to insert your install cd into your cd rom drive when it runs.

There is another way to reinstall IE6 and work around the "you already have a newer one..." message. It does involve changing a registry setting, so let's try system file checker first.

Click the start button on your taskbar then click Run...
Type in sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)
Click the OK button.
Follow the prompts and reboot when it's finished.

If that doesn't help, we can try the next fix.

tried to re install IE from microsoft download page but it tells me i have a newer one already installed..

I thought I had a way around that, but it won't work. It works only to reinstall IE6 SP1.
The problem is that there is no download of an installer for IE6 SP2.
It is included in the full service pack 2 update.

Did your computer come with sp2 already installed or was it updated?

If it was updated, check in the add/remove programs list for Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Choose uninstall, then go to Microsoft Update and click express install. It should reinstall sp2 which includes IE6.

Any luck?
