A computer running Windows ME will not start Windows, the symptoms:

The machine starts, the ME screen appears followed by the message:

"Windows Protection Error you need to restart your computer system halted".

The problem has occurred since AOL Broadband was installed last evening. It worked last night until the machine was turned off, but the message appeared as soon as the machine was switched on today. It is not possible to get far enough into Windows to uninstall AOL.

Any ideas?
I'd like to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming in terror like his passengers

Grab your start-up floppy and stick it in there.
When you get to the prompt type
scanreg /restore
and pick an earlier date before the aol install.
That should put you right back to working.
