System hangs up

My system is running on Windows XP Professionl OS and from past few weeks i am facing problems of system hang up. It does not operate once it is hang up. Restart is the only option left.

On every cold re-restart it checks the hdd drives for errors. Please help on this.

I think this is a virus but, i have already installed Kaspersky Antivirus.

Please describe in more specific detail what you mean by system hangs?
What are you doing when that occurs?
