I've got a PS/2 mouse plugged into a PS/2 - USB adapter. When the computer is powered down, the mouse stays on.. Anyone know why ?

Probably because the USB ports are set to always be on. There should be a setting in the BIOS to change that, though Im not sure where off the top of my head.

I think it varies by motherboard/system.

I have 1 system where the mouse is still powered (PS2 connection) and 1 (PS2) where it is not.

I only recently noticed that the one retains a powered status , accidentally turned the mouse over one night.

IF its plugged into a powered hub the hub stays powered. If its plugged into the PC directly try turning off the power supply (look for a switch on the PSU) or unplugging the PC and see if the laser turns off.

The motherboard still gets stand-by power from the PSU, so it could boot on a wake-up call from e.g. the LAN, keyboard
or cordless mouse.
You might be able to switch these things off (see your mobo manual).
If not, disconnect the mains to the PC when you are done computing.
