2 weeks ago I see my computer screen is completely blank. ctrl/alt/delete or any other button push doesn't do anything. So I restart my computer. Then I get the "Bootmgr is missing" screen; over and over and over again. So I put my Vista disk in the drive and restart, but Vista boots up just fine. It works till 2 days ago when I find the same blank screen. So I put the Vista disk back in and boot from the disk and I get a blue screen. I put both 64 bit and 32 bit Vista disks into each of my DVD drives and both give me a blue screen.

My friend says it could be a virus. He suggests I get a hard drive, disconnect all hard drives but the new one, and install Vista. I try this and still get the blue screen. So I try replacing all my data cables to the hard drives and DVD drives with no success. So I re-connect the old hard drive and now Vista loads and has been working ever since. So I do a full scan with Avast and it doesn't find anything. There were 3 files it couldn't scan though. This is what it listed:

C:Windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG\WD-20100428-1216.dmp
C:Windows\MEMORY.dmp
C:Windows\System32\winevt\Logs\Microsoft-Windows-Resources-Exhaustion-Detector%4operational.evtx

I am worried that this problem will come back again. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem is? Thanks for any help!

I would run a memory test from http://www.memtest.org and use http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/W7.htm to burn the ISO to a CD.

***** A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Ok, I ran memtest today on all four of my memory modules (they are each 1 gig Corsaire Dominator 6400) and let it run 5 times. I didn't get any errors.

I did call a friend of mine who used to work at Falcon Northwest in their repair department. He thinks the blue-screen when booting from the Vista disk was a separate issue. He said they used to have problems with optical drives running through Sata ports and that could be the problem. Apparently switching to IDE would solve the problem.

He thinks a possible reason for the Bootmgr error is the Sata cables, which are black with a metal clip. Apparently they used to have customers calling in with this problem and fixing it was as simple as re-seating the cables. I did get these cables from my roomate at the time who worked in Falcon's tech support. He said Falcon switched back to the red cables which seat a little better. I did switch to the red cables the other day when I was having the problem and it didn't fix it. He also suggested I run error checking on my C drive, and he also suggested running Data Life Guard Diagnostics. I will try those and see if that helps.

Do you guys have any other suggestions?

Run those tests, and post the results here. I am more interested in the hard drive diagnostics.
