Hi. A friend pointed me here after I told him that my computer had been hit by a trojan that Norton could detect but couldn't clean, as well as some assorted nasties that would immediately reinstall themselves after Spybot detected and cleaned them. This is a shared computer, so I honestly don't know how it got infected.

The trojan is a downloader trojan, eied_s7_c_7. exe. I forgot to take note of the one that Spybot couldn't remove, but I suspect that I have one or more diallers in my computer as I haven't been able to use my internet properly since the computer got infected.

Startup has also been extremely slow, and I keep getting messages about this program or another being a corrupted file. There's also something called mediaticketsinstaller that won't disappear at startup unless you click OK.

Please help me! Here's the hijackthis log I got two days ago:

Hello eriolclow and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kernels32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\efsdfgxg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\birdihuy32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MAXD1.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VXH8JKDQ6.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VXH8JKDQ7.EXE
C:\Program Files\asrc\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Here's the new hijackthis log. Didn't really encounter any problems while doing the online scans, but bitdefender seems to delete infected files without prompting and I'm not sure if that's OK, because it might have deleted something that wasn't supposed to be deleted. The deleted files mostly seem to be from Norton's quarantine section though.

Hi eriolclow. That looks better. Just a couple of left-over items to take care of.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.178.84
O15 - Trusted IP range: 67.19.178.84 (HKLM)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi. I tried to remove the problem areas you pointed out, but when I ran another Hijackthis log immediately after removing them they were back again. I seem to remember that I already did remove these the first time around, but after I rebooted and posted the new log last week, you pointed out that they were still there, so I tried removing them again now but it seems the same thing has happened...

Hi eriolclow. There might be something else holding those entries in place. Let's try a different scanner and see what it shows us.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

Sorry if it took so long for me to post this...

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi eriolclow. Ok, let's try a different approach here. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\explorer\run]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"shell"=""

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer.

Step #2

Now let's manually reset the IE security Zones.

1. Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools > Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab.
4. Click the Internet Icon.
5. Click Default Level.
6. Click the Local Intranet Icon.
7. Click Sites.
8. Remove any Web sites from the list that you do not recognise or do not trust. (look for the 67.19.178.84 entry)
9. Click Default Level.
10. Click the Trusted sites Icon.
11. Click on Sites.
12. Remove any Web sites from the list that you do not recognise or do not trust. (look for the 67.19.178.84 entry)
13. Click Default Level.
14. Click the Restricted sites Icon.
15. Click on Sites.
16. Remove any Web sites from the list that you want to have access to.
17. Click Default Level on lower right corner of the window.
18. Click OK on lower right corner of the window.

Step #3

Ok, reboot and post a new HijackThis log and a new WinPFind log.

Cheers.

The problem IP range still shows up in the Hijackthis log...

WINPFIND log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi eriolclow. Let's see if we can find where that is sitting in the registry. Download RegSearch and unzip it to it's own folder. Open the folder and double-click on the RegSearch.exe file to start the program. In the top area for the strings to search for enter 67.19.178.84 and then click the Ok button to run the search.

When the search is finished Notepad will open up with the results of the search. Post that information back here and we'll go from there.

Cheers.

Hi eriolclow. Hmm, that's interesting. It should be showing in the registry key for the trusted sites. I've seen something similar to this before so let's try something else here.

Download DelDomains.zip and unzip it to your desktop.

Locate the deldomains.inf file on your desktop. Right-click on it and choose Install from the popup menu.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi eriolclow. It's been a while. This latest log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any other problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the View menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • In the Hidden files section unselect Show all files.
  • Click OK.
Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hi. Sorry if I forgot to reply again. Anyway, not really encountering any other problems aside from the browser's occasional tendency to freeze up when I'm running a high resource program at the same time as internet explorer, particularly when I visit sites that have pop-ups. I think my computer is set to block pop-ups, though this doesn't seem to be one of Norton's features from what I can see. ^^
