I have two devices IEEE 1394 and Realtek RTL8139 listed under UNKNOWN in device manager.
I have deleted ALL previous unknowns (about 7) and when I reboot these two are found and drivers are automatically installed but they still end up under UNKNOWN. I tried reinstalling a new driver and it did not because what was installed was determined to be the best.

SO........ Windoz XP sees the devices, installs drivers, but still lists them as unknown and the LAN doesn't work.

I must say that this started after a McAfee update which I uninstalled - but problem still exists.

System manufacturer and model?

Reading Material.

You might try the procedures listed at Remove Unused Drivers and Devices - http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/Win...andDevices.html

thx hamluis
it is an emachine w3400
the system says that it is not working because it cannot install the device driver.
It appears to know what the device is - realtek 8139 - and finds and installs the s/w but requires a reset because it isn't sure. I have the latest drivers from emachine and realtek
If I install a PCI NIC - which also happens to be the same chip - and disable the onboard one, it does the same thing.

I suspect something got screwed up in the OS by McAfee.

don't follow?
the device manager has an entry UNKNOWN - if it doesn't know what the device is it would put it into OTHER but it clearly knows what the device is and supposedly tried to install the driver but could not for some reason and stuck them in UNKNOWN which I guess is an inside M$ joke.

it just gives the info I already posted -- Code 31
it isn't working because windows can't load the drivers

NOT that it doesn't know what it is - it clearly does know
NOT that it can't find the drivers - it has tried with both sets of drivers I dnld.

It can't LOAD the drivers

It tries - but obviously fails when it says that I have to restart because there might be a problem.

This is the first time I have seen devices in UNKNOWN, but they are clearly know - what is unknown is why Windows can't load them.

Then your devices are probably dead.
