A few weeks back i started getting warnings that i realised were from fake antispyware. (When i looked on the net i found very similar screenshots of the warnings.) I also started getting web page redirects and was sometimes completely unable to reach a web page i wanted to go to. My AVG was disabled and so was my Windows firewall. I ran Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Malwarebytes picked up quite a few things, including Paladin Antivirus. (I still have the log file for that if you want it.)
Functionality improved, but today i got the fake warning again. In addition, in the last couple of days there has frequently been very heavy load on the CPU for no apparent reason, making the machine very slow. And i'm still getting the web page redirects, as well as browser crashes.
Would be grateful for any help you can give me.

  • If you are running Vista, please run all the fixes as an administrator. This is done by right-clicking the program and clicking "Run as Administrator".

Please do the following so I can take a look at the current state of your system.

We need to run RSIT
  1. Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double click on RSIT.exe.
  3. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  4. Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

NEXT:
(This step may produce a blank log. Let me know if that is the case)
We need to run a GMER scan
  1. Download GMER and save to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  2. Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  3. Double click the GMER program. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  4. You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  5. Make sure all options are checked except:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive, which is typically C:\
    • Show All (This is important, so do not miss it.)
Note: If GMER crashes or hangs, please retry running a scan. Only this time, in addition to the options mentioned above, uncheck Devices as well.
  6. When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • Log.txt
  • info.txt
  • gmer.log

Hello aommaster. Really appreciate your help.
I have run RSIT. The two logs are posted below.
I was not able to run GMER. It starts fine but launches straight into a scan without allowing me to uncheck any boxes, then crashes. I will restart in safe mode and try again; will post results if i can run it as you request. (Please note the earlier Gmer scan attached to my first post probably did not have these boxes unchecked.)
Bishboy

Nope. Still crashes off safe mode.
I haven't downloaded a new version of Gmer, since i had one from about a week ago. I will download again from your link and re-try. however, i can only do that later this morning since i have a meeting that i have to attend now.
Thanks again.

Still no joy. I downloaded a new version and ran that in safe mode, but with the same result. I see from other discussions that Gmer runs an automatic quick scan when it's opened. I guess it's this scan that is crashing each time.

Hello, bishboy.
No problem. Let's proceed with the fix, and perhaps GMER may run better once the system is cleaner.

We need to disable TeaTimer
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  1. Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  2. If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  3. ClickMode and then on "Advanced Mode"
  4. You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press yes
  5. Click on Tools
  6. Click on Resident
  7. Uncheck the following checkboxes:
    • Resident "SDHelper" (Internet Explorer bad download blocker) active.
    • Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection for over-all system settings) active.
  8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

NEXT:

We need to download and run ComboFix (by sUBs)
  1. Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan.
They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results". For more details, please check this thread
  2. Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:
    Link 1
    Link 2
** IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  3. Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  5. Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  6. Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed. Click 'Yes' to continue scanning for malware. Click 'No' to exit
  7. Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  8. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log (under Trend Micro in your Program Files folder).
**A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
**This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
**ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis Log

Please do not send me PM's requesting for help. The forums are there for a reason : )
If I am helping you and do not respond to your thread for 48 hours, please send me a PM

Thank you aommaster. Here's the Combofix log and a new HijackThis log. (I used the new 2.04 release of HijackThis but got bounced to a Grinler topic here asking me to use 2.02, so this log is from 2.02.) Bishboy

Hello, bishboy.
Glad to help out smile.gif

We need to run a Combofix script
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it. Do not copy the word "code".
    CODE
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/312979/fake-antispyware-and-web-page-redirects/

    Driver::
    k

    File::
    C:\tujserrew.bat
    C:\fixme.reg
    C:\fix.reg
    c:\windows\system32\o.sys
    c:\windows\Fonts\6Lvq5dS4.com
    c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\oYUB550GA.dat

    RenV::
    c:\program files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl .exe
    c:\program files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx .exe
    c:\program files\AVG\AVG9\avgtray .exe
    c:\program files\HPQ\Default Settings\cpqset .exe
    c:\program files\HPQ\HP Wireless Assistant\HP Wireless Assistant .exe
    c:\program files\Messenger\msmsgs .exe
    c:\program files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh .exe
  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
  5. Now, drag and drop CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

NEXT:

Please generate a fresh GMER log (let me know if you still can't get it to run)

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh GMER log

Hmm. When i restarted the machine this morning and opened Firefox to get your response, i got a couple of the warnings from the fake antispyware again. I then looked to run ComboFix with the script, and got a warning message that ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.2 was active. I have previously used this antivirus, when my AVG was disabled by the antispyware, but i can't find it on my machine now. It's not in my Programmes list in any obvious directory (like ESET or NOD); it's not in the Control Panel list of programmes i can uninstall; and i can't see any process that looks like it in the list of active processes in the Task Manager.
Since i think we're probably on opposite sides of the Atlantic, i will run ComboFix anyway and post the log, rather than wait till this evening.

Hi!

It's probably a residual reference in Windows. I can get that cleaned up for you once you've run this script smile.gif

Hello, bishboy.
More than happy to help! How's your computer doing? Any other problems?

You mentioned that you had ESET uninstalled. This CFScript will remove that ESET as a listed AV in your combofix log (if you're still using ESET, then skip this script and proceed with updating java).

We need to run a Combofix script
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it. Do not copy the word "code".
    CODE
    SecCenter::
    {E5E70D32-0101-4F12-8FB0-D96ACA4F34C0}
  4. Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe
  5. Now, drag and drop CFScript into ComboFix.exe
  6. When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

NEXT:

We need to update your version of Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  1. Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  2. Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".
  3. Click the Download JRE button to the right.
  4. Select your Platform: "Windows".
  5. Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  6. Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  7. Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  8. Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  9. Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  10. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  11. Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  12. Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  13. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  14. Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  15. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Please make sure you turn on the Java Automatic Update Feature

Then you will not have to remember to update it when Java introduces a new version.
Java is updated very frequently, and the old versions are malware magnets.

Note: This feature is available only on Windows XP, 2003, 2000 (SP2 or higher) and set by default for these operating systems.

NEXT:

We need to run a Panda Active Scan
  1. Please go here to run Panda's ActiveScan
  2. Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  3. Click the big Scan Now button
  4. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  5. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  6. When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
  7. When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the Export to button, Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • ActiveScan Report
