Hello there!

First off thanks for all your help, I've been getting help here a few times already!

And now let's begin with my newest and latest problem....
So I think I got infected with something that installed a program onto my Windows 7 32-bit machine.
The program is called "Antivirus Win 7" It pops up with PLENTY of warning about malware, viruses that may enter my machine and asks if I want to run a scan. Also it comes up with plenty of virus alerts (they actually look like real alerts and if I click on them) they would lead me to run the "Antivirus Win 7" program.

I believe this is an ave.exe virus thing I've seen around in the forums too!

So please I need help! I really don't want to reformat my machine since I have so many documents already...

I have also tried to run Malware Bytes but it wouldn't even run. I need help!!!!!!!

I also get a pop-up message now that reads:
"Error in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\NVCPL.DLL
Missing entry: NVSTARTUP"
when I boot up my machine.

Also it's been freezing up my Firefox everytime now and it's popping up with tons of download boxes asking me to download things and constantly warns me of malware, spyware, viruses. It's really affecting my laptop!

Here is a HiJack This Log: (I will try to update it every night since I know you may want to see the newest and latest log)

I just tried to run HiJackThis again for the latest report (4/27/10) But I got an error from HiJackThis stating
"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them.
For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'"

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process. Please also continue to work with me until I give you the all clear. Even if your computer appears to act better, you may still be infected.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.

Once we start working together, please reply back within 3 days or this thread may be closed so we can help others who are waiting.

We need to create an OTL report,
  • Please download OTL from this link.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:

    netsvcs
    msconfig
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button.
  • The scan should take a few minutes.
  • Please copy and paste both logs in your reply.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new OTL log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

In your reply, please post both OTL logs and the GMER log.

If I don't respond within 2 days, please feel free to PM me.
Please don't ask for help via PM. The forums are there for a reason. Please post in the forums so others may benefit as well.

Hello etavares,

Since this virus, I have had problems opening ANY file. If I try to open ANY file it would tell me it is unable to locate the exact location. I have to run everything by right clicking on the program and clicking "Run as Administrator". This malware/virus/whatever it is, is really causing me a lot of grief.

So I hope that won't affect how the programs will work.

But here is the GMER Log and OTL Log. Also I have already disabled the CD Emulation via DeFogger

Thank you. I appreciate your help. I may not be able to respond to you until about later tonight (8pm EST). Until then please take a look at the logs.

Hello, whiteout.

You are infected of course, so let's get to work. If you can't get MBAM to run, please rename MBAM.exe to MBAMa.exe and try to run it that way.

P2P Warning and Request
The log shows that you have been using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case uTorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come a long way and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of their malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. I recommend that you uninstall this program. That is optional, however. If you decide to not uninstall, please refrain from using it until I let you know your computer is clean.

Ask Toolbar Warning"

I see you have the Ask.Com toolbar installed. This often comes bundled with spyware and is recommended you remove.

Please see here for more information:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/uninstall/...sk-Toolbar.html

If you would like to remove it, please go to add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.

Step 1

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save to your desktop.
Link 2
Link 3
Link 4
  • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
  • If using Vista or Windows 7, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
  • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
  • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
  • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
  • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Do not reboot once you run this tool, it will reset the temporary fixes. This program will help others to run by stopping malware that may interfere with the other tools.

Step 2

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Hello etavares,

Firstly thank you again!

Secondly here is a log from rkill, I don't know if you needed it but here goes anyways:

This log file is located at C:\rkill.log.
Please post this only if requested to by the person helping you.
Otherwise you can close this log when you wish.

Hello, whiteout.

First, the good news, MBAM did remove most of the malware. Unfortunately, you did have a rootkit intalled on your computer.

We'll take out the Ask Toolbar manually.

Backdoor Warning
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do. If you do decide to proceed, please continue with the fix below.

Step 1

please backup manually using ERUNT with the following instructions:
  1. Please locate the ERUNT icon on the desktop. If it is not there, click Start and type ERUNT into the search box.
  2. Right click the ERUNT icon in the desktop or the Start menu, and select Run as Administrator
  3. Click OK at the first message box.
  4. Ensure the checkboxes for both "system registry" and "current user registry" are checked. Leave the default save location in there.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Yes to create the new folder.
  7. You'll get a window saying "registry backup complete" once it's done. Click OK. If you get an error message, please STOP here and let me know. Do not proceed with any additional instructions until you check back with me.

Step 2

Please pull anything out of hte recycle bin that you want to save. Part of this fix will empty temp files, and that does include the recycle bin.

We need run an OTL Script
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors if you do not still have it.
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Paste the following code under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom. Do not include the word "Code".

Hello etavares!

Another backdoor trojan wow....
I've decided to reformat my computer then, I'm going to save my files. Would the trojan be transferred over if I decide to save my files and then put it back into the new copy of Win 7?

I've actually already reformatted it already, I was just wondering if I can run some more tests to show you so you can check if the backdoor trojan is still there. Like I said I have my files backed up from the previous Win 7 so I was wondering if the trojan would transfer over to the new reformatted version of Win 7

Also is there ANY way to prevent these backdoor trojans? This is my 2nd one already....and they are really rather ANNOYING! mad.gif

Hi whiteout,

It depends what/how you backed up. If you only back up documents and not executable files (e.g. .exe, .scr, .htm, .html, .com, .bat, .pif, etc.) or system files (anything in C:\windows\) you significantly limit your chance of reinfecting your computer. You should also scan the files you backed up with your antivirus (make sure the definitions are updated) to ensure that they are clean before copying them back over.

Here's a good article on how to reformat:
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Also, to protect yourself against malware and reduce your chance of reinfection in the future, I strongly recommend to have a look at following links (giving some advice and tips):EDIT: BBCode

PS> A reformat should ensure your computer is clean. Note that is more than reinstalling windows...you need to do a 'custom' installation in Windows 7 to do that. You can run GMER to confirm you are clean.

I'm not sure if I chose the custom when I did my reformat since I have never reformatted using Win 7 CD before and the way they make clean copies changes with each OS.

So if you can please take a look at the GMER Log and let me know!

Once again I really appreciate your help!

Thank you so much!

OK, that looks clean. The MBR entries are false positives. Perhaps it's leftovers from the old installation if you only did a reinstall? Not sure why they're there, though, but it looks clean to me. Don't miss the links I shared in post 8 above to help you from getting infected again. Safe surfing!
