I have a number of problems that may be caused by one or more malware programs. I am able to update and run Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy, and McAfee. Because these are all updating, I've assumed that one of them would eventually update with a cure for this particular problem, but I've been patiently updating and scanning for a few weeks now, and the problem(s) persist. In the meantime, I've become quite familiar with the symptoms. Unfortunately, I don't know how much of the trouble I'm having is due to malware, and how much (if any) is just ordinary Windows orneriness, but it's not my intention to post multiple problems in this request. The one symptom I would really like to focus on is the redirecting of my Google searches. Anything else that might get fixed in the process will be icing on the cake. I will be grateful for any help you can offer!

The main problem is that my Google searches get hijacked: instead of going to the web page of the result I click on, I go to some other website such as sfscooter.com, doctored to look like it has information relative to the Google search. This happens in Firefox (my browser of choice) and also in IE (which I tried as a test). I can bypass the problem by right-clicking on the Google result, copying the address, and pasting it into the address bar.

A second, possibly related, problem is new tabs opening, trying to take me to infected/infecting websites. I've become pretty good at control-W closing these tabs, but if I don't close them in time, I'll often get a pop-up window saying I've won a prize associated with the URL of the webpage I was just viewing. I used to have my mouse set to jump to the default option in a pop-up window, so I accidentally clicked "yes" on one of these once, and it took me someplace that infected me with one of those Windows XP Security viruses (SuperAntiSpyware took care of that one). Needless to say, I've adjusted my mouse settings so that the pointer no longer automatically jumps to the default option.

Here are other symptoms that have arisen around the same time the redirecting started:

I am unable to run Windows Update. When I try, IE opens and goes (apparently) to http://windowsupdate.microsft.com, but the "http://windowsupdate" part is grayed out, and I get the following message: "Internet Explorer cannot display the web page." If I start at microsoft.com and try to click through to the update page, I get the same result.

When I boot up, I often get a "Windows installer preparing to install..." window. Whatever it's trying to install, it never seems to get very far before giving me an "unable to install" message, so I usually cancel this now. On bootup, I also get a "Roxio Easy MEdia Creator 7 Basic DVD Edition Please wait while Windows configures Roxio Easy Media Creator 7 Basic DVD Edition." This also is never able to finish (I get a message asking me to insert the Roxio disc), and I have to cancel it two or three times before it stops popping up.

One more window I occasionally get on bootup: "Severe There was a problem authenticating your version. Please make sure your system is set to the current date."

Some time (minutes or hours) after booting up, I can expect the following to pop up: "Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Generic Host Process of Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" with the usual info about reporting to Microsoft. Whether I report the error or not, sometimes immediately, sometimes a few minutes later, the Windows task bar will blank out briefly and come back with inverted colors and the wrong font. This is the least of my problems.

Far more annoying: the sound sometimes drops out altogether. Sometimes this follows a message like, "Nullsoft DirectSound Output v2.49 (d) Error Bad DirectSound driver. Please install proper drivers or select another device configuration. Error code: 88780078." Rebooting takes care of this.

As I mentioned before, I don't know how many of these problems are related to the malware, but I'm not asking or expecting solutions to them all. I'd like to start with the Google redirecting, and if the other problems don't go away, I'll look for solutions or post again as appropriate.

While I've been preparing this post, a new problem has come up: I have been unable to run GMER to completion without the machine rebooting. I've tried to run it three times, and although the third time it ran for over three hours, it still rebooted before it was done. It's possible that this is unrelated to GMER, and my wife will be running the computer all day today (as she does every day), so we'll see whether it reboots without GMER running. In any case, I will continue to try running GMER tonight, and I'll update this post if it's successful, but I'm hoping you can at least get started without the GMER scan. Also, I was unable to post this topic from home last night (Sunday, 4/25)--I kept getting a "server reset try again" error message, so I'm posting from work.

For what it's worth, I have already disabled Spybot's Teatime function and run my malware programs (SAS, MWB, Spybot, and McAfee) with it off. I got the idea from checking postings by people with similar problems, but now that I'm posting myself, I won't try anything further until I've heard from a Bleeping Computer Official.

This all started when I stumbled upon a "Windows XP Security" type malware while visiting stumbleupon.com (I think). Superantispyware and Malwarebytes seemed to take care of that, but the redirecting and popups persist.

That's about it. No, wait, one more thing: PLEEEASE HEEEEEEELP!!!! This is driving me crazy!!!!

I managed to run GMER to completion overnight last night, so although I realize this will bump me down the queue a day, I'm attaching the GMER log.

The computer ran all day yesterday without rebooting, but after I saved the GMER log this morning, I ran MBAM, and the computer rebooted before it finished. I then updated and ran MBAM (nothing), SuperAntiSpyware (only adware tracking cookies), and SpyBot (a MS firewall override setting and a MS virus protection override setting, reset). The redirecting persists. I anxiously await your help!

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
regards,
schrauber

Hello, CLSI
Welcome to the Bleeping Computer Forums. My name is Thomas (Tom is fine), and I will be helping you fixing your problems.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.
  • Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

Please go here and have a look how you can disable your security software.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on the renamed Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Hi Tom,

Sorry about the delay--I had to hive a package of honeybees this afternoon. I did manage to get through a full GMER scan (before you posted), and I'm attaching the log. I tried running combofix three times, though, and although it did install Microsoft Windows Recovery Console the first time, it rebooted before completing the scan all three times. Unlike the GMER reboots that were happening before, these reboots all seemed to happen after about the same amount of time. Should I keep trying?

When you wrote "Please go here and have a look how you can disable your security software," I took that to mean that I should go ahead and disable my security software, so it is currently disabled. What now?

Hi again, Tom,

I tried running combofix again a couple of times this morning. The first time, it told me a new version was available, so I downloaded it, and I noticed that it said it would reboot if it found an infection (I hadn't noticed that before). Sure enough, it rebooted, so I ran it again, and it rebooted again. The problem remains. Do I continue running it until it stops rebooting? In the meantime, I've turned McAfee's real-time protection and firewall back on (I'm a bit uncomfortable having those off while I'm connected to the web).

David (a.k.a. CLSI)

Not using the Search function in Windows, looking for "all files and folders" with "all or part of the filename" equal to either "C:\Combofix.txt" or just "Combofix.txt," and checking both C and E drives. I guess that means no.

Hi smile.gif

You must first verify that you can logon to the Windows Recovery Console.
To do so, you must have the Recovery Console installed or use the Windows XP installation cd.

How to install and use the Windows XP Recovery Console

Restart the computer and logon to the Recovery Console.
Execute the following bolded command at the x:\windows> prompt <--- the red x represents your operating system drive letter, usually C

ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.old
copy C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\redbook.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

Type Exit then restart your computer and logon in normal mode.

Please post back with a fresh Gmer logfile.

schrauber

Hi Tom,

This *appears* to have done the trick! I just tried a Google search, and I was able to click on three different results, all of which took me to the correct places. Most of the past four hours has been spent running GMER; the log is attached.

A couple of notes:

When I boot up, the option to boot in Windows Recovery Console (with the window that begins "Please select the operating system to start..." goes by extremely quickly. The only way I was able to reach it was to press F8 while it was whizzing past, then choose "return to previous menu" (or something like that).

Also, your first Console command:

ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.old

Resulted in a syntax error. My wife (the former programmer) noted that the ren command (according to the /? help info) only takes the new name as the second argument, so the following worked:

ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys redbook.old

I haven't poked around online enough yet to know if this also took care of the pop-up tabs problem. I actually think that Combofix made some headway on that (though it certainly didn't solve it completely). I'm a little hesitant to spend too much time on the web right now in case my computer is still vulnerable. For what it's worth, I turned off McAfee to do the GMER scan, but it's back on now.

In case you're waiting breathlessly to continue this cure, I need to go out now for about an hour, so please don't feel you need to post back right away.

Thank you once again--we've clearly made great progress!

David

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  • Click the button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Check
  • Click the button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Check
  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push
  • Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Push the button.
  • Push
A log file will be saved here: C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

Hi Tom,

Google searches still seem to go where they're supposed to go. The popup situation is also greatly improved: They are very few and far between now, but at least one occurred last night, after the redbook fix. This one started a completely new browser window (rather than as a new tab), and although I forget exactly what it was (my brain isn't getting any younger), it was clearly not associated with any of the websites my wife or I had been visiting. I haven't tried Windows Update yet. Is there any reason not to?

From reading other postings in this forum, I have a feeling we're not done yet, but you clearly have taken care of the number one problem (Google hijacking), and I'm not going to get greedy about your help: If the others are unrelated (I have a feeling the Roxio Easy Media Creator thing is, for example), I'll take another crack at them myself and repost if necessary. Thank you thank you thank you for getting the Google searches back!

Here are the logs:

MalwareBytes came up blank (not entirely surprising, since I've been updating and running it every other day or so). I've pasted the log below. ESET found only the renamed redbook file. Here's the ESET.txt file:

C:\WINDOWS\redbook.old Win32/Patched.EQ trojan deleted - quarantined
