Most laptops use LCD screens (I haven't seen one yet that doesn't, but I'll leave it open for when the new LED TV tech finally makes it to my laptop). That being said what you need to look at is the resolution and any other features of the screen.

I have a choice between a 17" screen with 1600 x 900 res or a 15.6" with 1366 x 768 colour shine . Would there be much difference in quality?

higher resolution generally means better picture quality, and the 17 inch screen is easier to see, however makes them bulkier, so its more of right now which would you prefer-something small and light, or doing a little extra work hauling around a bigger laptop with a better screen? and by better unless you do a lot of gaming, your probably not going to notice much of a difference in image quality.
