Hello ricb and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YourMonitor] C:\WINNT\Sys98
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [sys08917-1258723] C:\WINNT\sys08917-1258723.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AUNPS2] RUNDLL32 AUNPS2.DLL,_Run@16
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Sys98] C:\WINNT\Sys98.exe
O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler V3.exe
O20 - Winlogon Notify: policies - C:\WINNT\system32\nfrseng.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINNT\Sys98.exe
C:\WINNT\sys08917-1258723.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\AUNPS2.DLL
C:\WINNT\system32\nfrseng.dll

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi ricb. Let's try a different scanner once and see what it shows us.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

At the end of the scan I got an error which reads as follows:
Invalid data type for "adprot'.
I clicked ok and the scan stopped.
What follows is the scan up until that point

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hi ricb. It looks like we have a pretty good L2M infection going on in there. Let's remove that and then rerun the scans.

Print these directions or copy/paste them into a Notepad document and save it to your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • Download l2mfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.exe to start the installation.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts.
  • Open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, Notepad will open with a log. Post that log along with any additional information as directed below.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the new L2m logs back here along with a new HijackThis log and a new WinPFind log and I will review the information when it comes in.

How long should the Run Fix go for before the notepad comes up with the log? I have waited about 10 minutes with no response. Also upon reboot the screen says Program Error.
wintask.exe has generated error and will be closed by Windows

Hi ricb. It depends alot on many things. The size of the hard drive, how many files it has to remove, available memory, cpu, etc.

Just start it and let it run to completion. It could take a while for it to finish.

Cheers.

I ran the l2mfix.bat file. The computer rebooted but nothing happened. I left it on overnight. When I came back in the morning there was nothing there. I have rerun HTJ and WinPFind for your review.

Hi ricb. If nothing happens on the reboot then do this.

Run the l2mfix.bat file. When the system reboots, go into the l2mfix folder and run the second.bat file manually. This will run the fix and produce the log.

Cheers.

Hi ricb. That looks like it cleaned out pretty good. Now let's take care of the rest. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.anetwork.net/
O2 - BHO: ngsh33.clsIS - {941CA48C-3984-4E7D-AAF8-8755ED76EB50} - C:\WINNT\system32\ngsh33.dll
O2 - BHO: AdCom - {D7950AB4-67F5-458e-A37D-9F2DE7F250AC} - C:\WINNT\system32\AdCom.dll
O3 - Toolbar: UCmore XP - The Search Accelerator - {44BE0690-5429-47f0-85BB-3FFD8020233E} - C:\Program Files\TheSearchAccelerator\UCMTSAIE.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Welcome - C:\WINNT\system32\nfrseng.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINNT\system32\ngsh33.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\AdCom.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\spsgkd.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\NEWADP~2.EXE (a file whose name begins with NEWADP)
C:\WINNT\system32\wintask.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\mmxp2passion.exe

C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\qddit.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\mrcshext.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\IDETMIB1.DLL
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\nedsbsrv.dll
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\asi2evxx.dll

C:\Program Files\TheSearchAccelerator\ <--folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\msst\ <--folder
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\rark.exe

Step #4

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #5

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #6

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer and create a new HijackThis log and a new WinPFind log and post them back here.

Hi ricb. It looks like we are picking up new infections faster than they are getting cleaned off. Let's go at this again. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it to your desktop. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop:
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
Step #3

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save it to your desktop as regfix.reg :
