Hi,
I've had a run of it with spyware. Computer was infected with aurora at one point, got rid of that. Now I'm getting a lot of pop-ups that all seem to be from that searc-h site (yyy53.html). I tried switching to firefox, then eventually to opera, but whatever browser is my default is where the pop-ups appear. Bought Spyware Doctor to try and solve it, but after a clean with that, Adaware and Spybot now I'm still getting the pop-ups but now they have 505 errors. Also I'm getting these annoying flash-type popups all the time (got cable internet). Here's the file, please help.

Hello Xeno85 and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The HijackThis log looks pretty good. Let's run a different scanner and see what it shows us.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Thanks for the help. Here are the files

Hi Xeno85. It looks like we have an L2M infection here. Please do the following.

Print these directions or copy/paste them into a Notepad document and save it to your desktop. Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • Download l2mfix.exe and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.exe to start the installation.
  • Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts.
  • Open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.
  • Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing the Enter key.
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, Notepad will open with a log. Post that log along with any additional information as directed below.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the new L2m logs back here along with a new HijackThis log and a new WinPFind log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT,

I ran the program as asked, but the icons didn't disappear at all and a log file didn't pop up. Am I missing a step?

Hi Xeno85. There should be a file named lo2.txt in the l2mFix folder. See if that is there and post the contents back here. If it is not, then try running the l2mfix.bat file again.

Cheers.

Hi Xeno85. It doesn't appear that the l2mfix.bat file ran through correctly. Verify that the following files are present in the l2mfix folder and try running it again (if the results are the same then try running it from Safe Mode):fixautont.html.url
l2mfix.bat
locate.com
Ntrights.exe
Process.exe
readme.txt
Reboot.exe
RegDACL.exe
second.bat
strings.exe
zip.exe
win2000def.reg
winlogondefaults.reg

Post the log file back here so I can review it.

Cheers.

The program doesn't seem to be running after reboot. I just tried it in safe mode and the desktop never "flashed" so to speak. Also, the log file has the same stuff in it. Is there a way I can run the fix manually?

Hi Xeno85. If nothing happens on the reboot then do this.

Run the l2mfix.bat file. After the reboot, go into the l2mfix folder and run the second.bat file manually. This will run the fix and produce the log.

Cheers.

Hi Xeno85. Ok, let's clean up the rest of this. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download the Pocket Killbox and unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to your desktop.

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

We need to disable TeaTimer so it soes not interfere with the changes we are going to make.
  • Start Spybot-S&D.
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected.
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools and then click on Resident.
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and choose OK for any furhter prompts.
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2
  • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document. Save the document to your desktop as fixreg.reg and close Notepad.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved]
"{7DB51DFD-8740-4293-B6EF-1310985BA904}"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WindowsUpdate]

Step #3
  • Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the files in bold below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard
    • C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AU3API.DLL
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\j44oleh31h4.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\lv0o09d3e.dll
  • In Killbox click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard item
  • In the Full Path of File to Delete field drop down the arrow and make sure that all of the files are listed
  • Click the option to Delete on Reboot
  • If not greyed out click the checkbox for Unregister .dll Before Deleting
  • Now click on the red button with a white 'X' in the middle to delete the files
  • Click Yes when it says all files will be deleted on the next reboot
  • Click Yes when it asks if you want to reboot now
  • If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just reboot manually
Step #4
  • After the system reboots, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:
    • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = about:blank
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE
      O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Step #5

Locate the fixreg.reg file on your desktop and right-click on it. Choose Merge from the popup menu and answer Yes or Ok to any further prompts. You should get a message that the file was merged successfully.

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

Use the Add Reply button to post a new HijackThis log along with a new WinPFind log.

I will review the new information when it comes in.
