Sometimes my web browsing becomes very slow although downloads are fast. Am I infected?
I'm using Windows XP 32 bit.

I currently have the following protection in the system tray:
Microsoft Security Essentials
PC Tools Spyware Doctor
IObit Security 360

Hi kep1,

Have you tried running any programs such as MBAM or SAS?

Before running them, use TFC by Old Timer which can be found here. Make sure you close and save all your work before running TFC since it will more than likely need to reboot your computer.

I would only use the Microsoft Security Essentials instead of having all three loading when windows starts, but that's personal preference. Have you done a full or quick scan with MSE yet?

Well, the scans look good. Have you noticed any particular websites that seem to run slower? Are you getting any blue screens or error messages? Do you have other computers that are also on the same high speed internet connection? If so, are they much faster while browsing the web than this one? Also, about how old would you think the computer is and how much memory do you have?

You can find out how much memory by clicking start, then right-click my computer, then select properties. You will then see version of windows you are using, the service pack installed, the cpu, and then below all of that you will see a number such 512 MB RAM or 1GB RAM. That 's the memory number I need.

I would also recommend that you uninstall any toolbars that you might be using in IE or Firefox. You can do this by going to start, then control panel, then add/remove programs. Then you can look for any toolbar programs such as Yahoo Toolbar, or Google Toolbar, and remove them. I have found that usually toolbars will only slow you down a bit and aren't worth the performance hit. However, that's my personal opinion and many people like to use them.

Some days all web sites run slower. I'm not getting blue screens or error messages. I have another computer connected to my router and is slow too. I think the computer is 3 years old and I have 2 GB ram.

Try disabling your Spyware Doctor and IOBIT from running real time, and only use Microsoft Security Essentials.

Also, do you have an Internet Explorer icon on your desktop? If so, right click it and then select start with no add-ons. Now try it with no add-ons and see if it runs any faster for you? Do you see that option?

What Internet Service Provider are you using?

That's good news. Now we need to find out what add-on is causing the slow down.

Check out this guide here on BC that will help you check out some other things that might also be causing a slow down.

I recommend you read the apart that talks about managing add-ons with the add-on manager. It will tell you how you can disable individual add-ons ranging from toolbars to browser helper objects.

I would also advice on removing any toolbars that you might have installed through the control panel, then add/remove programs, then look for toolbars.
