Lately DEP has been arbitrarily closing explorer. Symantec Endpoint protection can't find anything.
If I restart explorer it usually works at least for a while. Only thing new that has gone into the computer is
Microsofts April 2010 updates, and a DIVX update. The problem started after the updates.
Do a System Restore? I am not a techie!!!

Hi imconfused -

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Systen restore - There is a "calander" looking item -
Select a date marked in early April > Click on it > Click OK ,and it will ask to confirm the restore > Click OK -
Then sit back while the system shuts down and then restarts - On restart it will ask you to confirm the restore > Click OK - DONE -

Thank You -

Well, Microsoft updates don't normally cause DEP problems...that would seem to leave your DivX as a likely suspect.

What is the exact error message please?

Have you checked Event Viewer for info relative to errors...which require your attention? Errors, not information items...some users don't seem to read the instructions and realize there is a difference.

You've stated that you installed DivX updates and your problems started.

DivX hangs, which means that there's a bug in it or it's damaged and needs to be uninstalled/reinstalled.

I think I'd uninstall DivX...reinstall it...and see if the DEP problem goes away.

Your questions about System Restore...are you referring to the XP SR function?

If DEP is closing functions, programs...there should be an error noted in Event Viewer, I would think. What is the exact error message provided when this happens?

Some infection may be a possible culprit here....

Did the microsoft scan from their site, and it did clean up a couple bugs that symantic missed.
The problem still exsists, but it seems to be less frequent. As a matter of fact, I haven't had
DEP shut down explorer all day. Maybe it is a good sign.

Good news , but....
You should really post at "Am I Infected?" forum to make sure, your computer is 100% clean.

It happened again. Bummer, since I went all day yesterday with out the problem.
All I know is (and I don't even have to be doing anything at the time) I get a
Data Execution Prevention popup that says "To help protect your Computer,
Windows has closed this program. Event viewer says:

I did several different scans, and except for a tracking cookie (Natch) no viruses found.
I'm going to try to remove and reinstall Divx, but I have my doubts.
I'll keep you posted, and thanks.
