Server: Why don't I see my servers files and programs???

From the Server, I can see client computers and the clients shared files. But, once I go to a client computer - I do not see the severs shared documents. I want to store most of the programs etc that are used on the server. But, how will I be able to access those files from a client computer?

a few details plz.
what server os?
any firewalls installed on the server other than default?
is this a domain?
if so are all the clients xp or above?
