My CPU is a P4 2.53GHZ CPU, according to EVEREST the core is a Northwood. I did a search on the net to find a P4 with a Northwood core. All I found that matched the criteria is a P4 with a Prescott Core. Is it possible that Northwood and Prescott are different names for the same core?

Socket 478

Also, another question. Is it possible to replace my CPU with another CPU of the same socket type?

I don't know where you searched but with google I found 2.53 Northwoods all over the place.

Yes, you can switch processor as long as the motherboard supports the particular processor, which can usually be found out at the motherboard-makers homepage.
