I'm sorry. I accidentally posted this 20 times! I didn't realize it was going through.

This weekend around April 18 I picked up a nasty trojan/virus/malware. I run Windows XP with service pack 3 and all recent updates. I have Windows Defender and Symantec Antivirus. It caused my Firefox browser (ver 3.6.3) to be redirected to sites like Directdr.com about every fourth time or so I open a new tab. Then Firefox suddenly quit and the XP security tool 2010 started up, popping up warnings and scanning my computer. I tried the Virus, Spyware, & Malware Removal Guide titled: How to remove XP Security Tool 2010, XP Defender Pro, and Vista Security Tool 2010. Malwarebytes found and removed alot of junk but every time it needed to restart, the computer always locked up on the Windows Logoff screen (it took a while to get to this screen also), I then had to do a hard shut down. On restart I would delete the files in the Malwarebytes Quarantine tab but after using Firefox I would start to get redirected every so often again and then it would quit again and start up the XP security tool 2010, XP Antivirus or XP Defender, the name would change but it would looked the same. It turned off my Windows firewall and antivirus in the Security Center. Windows defender does not seem to detect it. Symantic antivirus has caught several trojans but it is still around. I've tried Malwarebytes 3 times and it still comes back. It also can be started when I download images in Thunderbird e-mails and try Internet Explorer as well.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal

  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Thanks so much for your help. Sorry for my slow response, I am on jury duty. I did activate Immediate E-mail notification which I hadn't before. My status is better than before. I ran Malwarebytes about 20 times (almost all Full Scans) and it seems to have removed most of the Fake Antivirus program. It hasn't found anything since April 23rd when it found 2 registry keys, 3 registry values and 3 files infected. Windows defender, after I updated its definition file, also found this Trojan:FakeSpypro on April 24th and removed it (C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\cyvpax.exe). My Symantec Antivirus has also found loads of risks but none since April 23rd, the last being the Packed.Mystic!gen4 trojan.

My Firefox browser is still being occasionally hijacked to sites like directrdr.com. The tab just pops up when I try an open another tab from a web page I am in. There are other sites it goes to like:
roo.ca
cityofsalem.com
onlyspecialoffers.info
I added the NoSript Extension which I think is keeping me from being reinfected from these sites. I also deleted the following two files which seemed suspicious based on their date.
C:\DOCUME~1\Andres\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd110.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\Andres\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERd110.dir00\appcompat.txt

Thanks so much again for your help.

Best,

Andres

In my reply I'm not seeing all of the files I pasted. I'm attaching them in this reply.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Again thanks so much. I would like to try and clean it if possible. I ran Combofix and I am attaching the Log file as well as pasting it in below. I don't do banking on the computer but I will change my Paypal password. Do you know how long my computer has been infected?

Many thanks!

Best,

Andres

Hi,

there are a couple of leftovers. Please run the following script to remove them:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\system32\amcompatqc.sys
c:\windows\system32\adsndsn.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Thanks so much again. I really appreciate your help. I ran the script as directed and I've enclosed the Combofix file below.

Best,

Andres

Hi,

My computer is running well so far. No hijacking of the browser. Thanks for all your help so far. It's made all the difference. I ran the scan and it found 6 infected files. The results are pasted below. Can I delete the quarantined files?

Thanks again!

Best,

Andres

Hi,

it seems Eset targetted your Thunderbird backup. Do you need the backup restored or can you make a fresh one?

The log from Eset is looking ok. The files have previously been quarantined and are not harmful right now.

Many thanks for all your help!

Hi,

there are two more steps I'd like you to go throguh.

The first one is to update your software:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

Let me know if you run into any problems doing this.

regards myrti

Thanks so much. I did as you suggested and reinstalled Java and Acrobat reader. I completely uninstalled the older versions. Do you think my computer is good to go now? I really appreciate all the time you've devoted to helping me with this nasty root kit.

Best,

Andres

Hi,

yes I believe we caught the rootkit and got rid of it. This is why, as a final step, I'd like you to remove the programs we used and you're good to go. Unless you are still having problems with the PC?

Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  1. Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  2. Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  3. If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
