Desktop computer was well infected and would freeze shortly after starting windows.
MBAM would not run. Tried renaming followed by revising extension with no luck.
safe mode would not start. Missing or corrupt hal.dll was error message.
used system original restore disk to reload windows. Same corrupt .dll message.
Tried stopping any threatening looking processes from task manager with some luck. It was a race to stop them all before they froze the computer.
Removed some registry keys with names matching the virus/malware names and eventually was able to run selective startup through msconfig but after unchecking all startup items, one kept reappearing. It was a rundll32.exe starting the takavere.dll, then I would uncheck it, close, reopen and it would appear checked again, sometimes with a new name. It seemed to be cycling through about 5 different names.
MBAM still would not run.
Combofix would not run. Tried renaming w/ new name & extension. Finally it got as far as telling me there was a clock error, appeared to start scanning then quit without notice. I reset the clock and ran it again under the name personalprotector.bat and it completed the scan.
Combofix first detected some rootkit activity, then found and removed a ton of program files, .dll files, and registry keys, most all of which had names like the viruses, some with long names consisting of nonsense letters & numbers.

Side note: after this computer was infected, but before I was able to look at it, the power supply failed and took the motherboard out with it. I just replaced both before starting down this road. This is why the clock was originally off, I believe it was in the year 2004. Incidently, I think the battery is dead on the new motherboard because it won't maintain the clock if unplugged.

Current state: Machine boots normally but eventually slows down. It has not been reconnected to the internet, pending resolution of these issues, and the addition of some better protection. It is running windows xp home edition version 5.1.2600 SP2 build 2600 which was reloaded from the original restore disk and I have not gone back to microsoft for any updates since it is not connected to the internet.

Usual requested logs are as follows and as attached. Thanks in advance for your efforts and assistance.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Myrti,

Wow! Not what I was hoping to hear! Thanks for your efforts in looking through this. I am trying to decide what to do next and I will probably fret a little, curse a little, then format the drive. Meanwhile, this leaves me with a few hopefully easy questions I hope you can answer:

1. Does this rootkit have a name? Is it one of the post title issues, or were they just additional minor nuisances?
2. If I reformat the drive, can I then be sure it is safe? Should I repost the logs after that?
3. Is the format option on the original OEM software disk OK to use, or is there a more complete way this needs to be done?
4. Are networked computers also likely infected? Should I post logs for them as well or just look for something specific? They are behaving fine.
5. Is there a risk of re-infection if I save personal data, music, pictures, etc to a backup drive prior to reformatting?
6. If saving personal data before re-formatting, should I run combo-fix, MBAB, or anything else first to minimize the risk of saving the problem files along with the good files?

One thought comes to mind: just replace the drive and throw the infected drive away, then I know what ever is in it is gone.

Thanks again for your efforts.

Hi,

rootkits usually impress by not being visible. In this case the malicious file is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\953f683c2da36cedcfb1fc94c46e9888.sys and my guess would be that you haven't heard of it so far.
As long as the rootkit is active you shouldn't be able to see said file.

The files you listed are also malicious, however I do think that they are not directly related to the rootkit. But rogue programs such as personal protector very frequently install other infections and rootkits when they have taken posession of a PC.

If you reformat your PC, you should be safe. Reformatting a hard disk deletes all data. You can back up all your important documents, personal data files, photos to a CD or DVD drive, not a flash drive or external hard drive as they may become compromised in the process. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, and .html) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar) that have executable files inside them as some types of malware can penetrate and infect .exe files within compressed files too. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of file(s) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, scan the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.

If you're not sure how to reformat or need help with reformatting, please review:These links include step-by-step instructions with screenshots:Don't forget you will have to go to Microsoft Update and apply all Windows security patches after reformatting.
Also see How to keep your Windows XP activation after clean install.

Note: If you're using an IBM, Sony, HP, Compaq or Dell machine, you may not have an original XP CD Disk. By policy Microsoft no longer allows OEM manufactures to include the original Windows XP CD-ROM on computers sold with Windows pre-installed. Instead, most computers manufactured and sold by OEM vendors come with a vendor-specific Recovery Disk or Recovery Partition for performing a clean "factory restore" that will reformat your hard drive, remove all data and restore the computer to the state it was in when you first purchased it. See Technology Advisory Recovery Media.

If you need additional assistance with reformatting or have questions about multiple hard drives, you can start a new topic in the Windows XP Home and Professional forum. If you don't get a reply, please send me a PM and I will get someone to take a look.

Please do not run ComboFix on any PC unless specifically instructed by a Helper. It is not a tool that should be run frequently or without a cause at hand. MBAM on the other hand is a tool which I usually suggest to add to the malware defense line and that can be run once a week/twice a week/whenever you have the time

I do not see signs of a network aware infection on your PC. So your other Pcs are probably fine. It can't hurt to check them out though.

Myrti,

I am on the way to a healthy computer, I think. I backed-up all my personal data, located the factory original restore CD, booted with it and chose the full recovery (with all the warnings about lost data), and waited. The recovery screen spent very little time on the step "preparing disk" and seemed to go almost immediately into "copying files". If there was partitioning or formatting done, I didn't participate. Now I am wondering if it did format or just wrote over the old data.

This leaves me wondering: Does it matter?, Should I manually partition & format, then restore again just to be sure?

Any thoughts?

Hi,

it does indeed matter. When you do a repair install only Microsoft related files are modified. So the malware may remain completely untouched. When you do a format then all files are deleted and the malware should be disabled.

If in doubt I would suggest that you do a manual reformat and another reinstall.
