I repeatedly am prompted to accept cookies from www.ad-w-a-r-e.com. When I deny the request (usually twice with the cookie signature changing slightly), I get an alert box stating that there was a failed attempt to contact one of 5 different sites. Although the cookie signatures seem to cycle among the same 8 sequences, the destination sites rotate randomly. Here is a sample of some of the prompts:

The site www.ad-w-a-r-e.com wants to set a cookie.

I ran ewido suite scans, Spybot - Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware SE and the problem persists. I have even run the tools while in Safe Mode.

I was having the problem with IE only, then it infected Mozilla and now Firefox. I cleared all caches and cookies while in Safe Mode to no avail.

Currently the ZoneLabs firewall is set to HIGH for both 'Safe Zone' and Internet.

, cwerner144. Sorry for the delay. Let's get started...

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Thanks,

JC :flowers:

Sigh.

I downloaded the l2mfix.exe file and extracted it as instructed. When I double click on the l2mfix.bat file a command window opens and closes with no descermable output.

I opened the included .html file (rejecting cookies from re-directs as I did) leading to the autoexec.nt solution provided. I downloaded the W2kFiles.exe file supplied by the site and it copied three files into the WINNT/Systems directory.

I went back to the l2mfix directory and tried again to get the .bat file to execute and got the same result. I opened a CMD window, cd'd to the l2mfix directory and tried running the l2mfix.bat file from the command window and I get:

'find' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

Baa...

Lead on....

Have you rebooted?

It will take a couple of minutes after running the file before you will see anything.

Ok, I've rebooted. No change.

I rebooted to SAFE MODE and re-ran Ewido, Adware, Spyware S&D and HijackThis.

l2mfix.bat still opens and closes a CMD window without a prompt appearing. Running it again from a CMD line (as opposed to double clicking on the .bat file - which results in the above behavior) results in the same error regarding the 'find' command.

I checked WinNT/system32 and it does contain a find.exe executable.

Am I understanding your comment clearly?

run autoexec.nt fix (unpacks a .zip file into system32 directory)
reboot machine
execute l2mfix.bat file.

If so, I have done that and neither get a CMD window to stay open long enough to select option 1, nor does anything appear as a result of attempting to run the program.

What next?

Okay, let's try to get rid of the other major infection and see where we are after that. To me it appears that something is blocking the fix. After running this fix, please try the l2mfix one more time to see if that helps. I would shut down Zonealarm before attempting the l2mfix - just to eliminate the chance that it is blocking something. To me, it looks like you did everything that you should to get it to work...anyways, complete these steps, try the L2mfix one more time, and we will see where we are after that...

After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

1. Please move HijackThis to another location, preferably c:\Program Files\HijackThis. Anywhere is fine, other than your Desktop or a Temp folder. If HijackThis is in a temporary folder you run the risk of accidentally deleting the backups or it clutters your desktop with all the backups.
If you use Windows XP it might be that you just double clicked on the file HijackThis.exe, but that only extracts the file to a temporary folder. Please select the file and Extract it to a folder.

How do you make a permanent folder:

Click "My Computer", then "C:\" and then on "Program Files".
In the menu bar, "File"->"New"->"Folder".
That will create a folder named "New Folder", which you can rename to "HJT" or "HijackThis".
Now you have "C:\Program Files\HijackThis". Put your HijackThis.exe there.

2. Please download miekiemoes' LQfix batch here:
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiem...tools/LQfix.zip
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run LQfix.bat.
When finished, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log.

Sigh. Ok, I followed your instructions.. including moving the HijackThis executable where every hacker in the world will expect it to be.....

When in Safe Mode, Zone Alarm is not loaded/running. I executed LQfix.bat and got the same result I was getting with the l2mfix (commend window opens and closes instantly). For jollies, I executed the LQfix.bat command again from a command window and got the same error I received before:

" 'find' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. "

The first thing each of these batch files do is a 'find' to determine what version of the OS is running. Again, find.exe exists in the C:\WINNT\system32\ directory. But the batch programs/current environment doesn't seem to have it in the path.

If you haven't already done so, you should turn on the tracking of this topic. In your original post, there is a link on the top left hand side that you can click on called - Track This Topic. Clicking on this link activates the e-mail notification process. Okay, let's try a couple of things.

Let's turn on the viewing of hidden files:
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
With Windows Explorer, you should be able to find the file find.exe, under your c:\winnt\system32 folder.
Since you mentioned earlier -

I checked WinNT/system32 and it does contain a find.exe executable.

Please double check that. If it does not exist, you could copy the find.exe from the c:\winnt\system32\dllcache folder to the c:\winnt\system32 folder
Even it does exist, you could still try to copy it over to make sure that you have a good copy.

From there you could try to run one the l2mfix again.

If it doesn't work, you could send me a copy of your path statement.

Copy everything inside the quote box below (starting with path) and paste it into notepad. Go up to "File > Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as pathfind.bat on your Desktop.

path  > path.txt
notepad path.txt

Locate pathfind.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Save it. I will ask for it in your reply.

Also, does the account you are using have administrative rights?

Last question first...

I am using the wcsadmin account (Websphere Communication Server) which is in both the Administrators and Users group.

I did a search for find.exe... it is in 3 places:

1 - C:\WINNT\$NtServicePackUninstall$
2 - C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386
3 - C:\WINNT\system32

Created/Modified/Accessed dates for each:

1 - 20AU2005/22JL2002/20AU2005
2 - 07JL2002/19JN2003/20AU2005
3 - 07DE1999/19JN2003/20AU2005

All three have a size of 9.76Kb

There was no find.exe in the dllcache directory suggested.

Hidden files were already visible, I unchecked the hidden OS system files.

Here is the result of running the notepath.bat file.

PATH=C:\Program Files\RationalRoseEnterprise\ClearQuest;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared;

Looks to me like I need to add the WINNT\system32 directory to the path (somehow). This machine started as a development/product evaluation box and has evolved to a more general use machine...

Oh yes, the l2mfix.bat attempt failed due to the lack of 'find' command again.

Next step...

It's getting late here... here's a link that will show you how to set your path -

The path is now managed by Windows 2000 / Windows XP and not the autoexec.bat or autoexec.nt files. To change the system environment variables follow the below steps.

  1. From the desktop right click My Computer and click properties.
  2. In the System Properties window click on the Advanced tab.
  3. In the Advanced section click the Environment Variables button.
  4. Finally, in the Environment Variables window highlight the path variable in the Systems Variable section and click edit. Add or modify the path lines with the paths you wish the computer to access. Each different directory is separated with a semicolon as shown below.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000549.htm

You should probably add the following 2 paths -
C:\Winnt;C:\Winnt\System32

I will follow-up tomorrow AM.

With the $PATH variable fixed, l2mfix.bat runs just fine. The results of the Find Log are here:

I would assume that I should re-enable the hiding of OS system files?

Lead on.

Excellent!!!

We still have more work to do...

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the desktop icons dont dissappear or the log does not pop up then in the l2mfix folder double click the second.bat file to continue with the fix.

I would assume that I should re-enable the hiding of OS system files?

No, not yet...we will need them off with the file deletions later. :flowers:

Ok, ran the fix option (in the still open l2mfix session window from yesterday) and it rebooted, prompted for Admin password and launched a windows session with the network connection not blocked. As a result Firefox launched twice and tried to connect to several sites (unsuccessfully).

The program did not cause the icons to disappear or a scan to initiate, so I ran second.bat. The icons disappeared, the two passes completed and there appeared to be a problem creating the .zip file as the logs show:

cwerner144:

We are having all sorts of fun with this one.

Let's try this again.
