Posted 19 April 2010 - 02:22 PM

I've read through a lot of google forum results, and a few of these forum results, and I'm dreading all of this....I have McAfee Internet Protection, and have used spybot search-and-destro, malabytes mal-ware remover, and PC tools spyware doctor (all of them updated), no no avail. I've downloaded HiJack This, and my log is below.

Finding a post on this page (http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Web+Search/thread?tid=6df7e15519290612&hl=en) that recommended combofix, I was going to try it on my own, but then saw the warnings.

I humbly await your suggestions. Seems like on of the anti-virus programsshould have come up with a fix to this one by now.....

Should I download combofix?

Many thanks.

Hi emilyj,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer.

My name is mpascal, and I will be helping you fix your problem.

Before we begin, I would like to make a few things clear so that we can fix your problem as efficiently as possible:
  • Be sure to follow all my instructions carefully! If there is anything you don''t understand, don''t hesitate to ask.
  • Please do not do anything or perform other steps unless I have asked you to do so.
  • Please make sure you post all logs I ask you to, and make sure that the entire log gets posted.
  • Don't attach any logs unless asked. Posting them in the forums will make them easier to analyze.
  • If you are unsure of how to reply, or need help with anything regarding the website, please look here.

As it has been a few days, I'm going to need some fresh logs. Please run the following:

STEP 1 - MBAM

Open Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.
  • Under the Updates tab, click Check for Updates. Let the updates install (if any).
  • After that, under the Scanner tab, click Perform Quick Scan and then Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

STEP 2 - GMER

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.

Hi there,

I just finished running spy-bot search-and-destroy again.

I've deleted malware bites (so that it didn't conflict with my mcafee), but I'm happy to download it again. should I turn off mcafee before I run it again, or should it work okay with mcafee?

GMER, however...I tried 4 times to run it, and 4 times it gave me the blue screen of death. I'm reluctant to try again. should I just start with the malware bites, and go from there?

thanks for your help.
Emily

Hi Emily,

Sure, re-download Malwarebytes. You can download it here.

For GMER, see if you can get it finished with only Sections and Files checked.

Yikes...well, 1 out of 3, so far. Below is my Malabytes log from last night.

I tried to run GMER with just sections and files checked; it gave me the blue screen almost instantly. I then restarted in safe mode, and tried again--this time, it went for maybe 20 minutes or a half hour before giving me the blue screen.

The virus/mal-ware seems to be worse: now it actually starts IE (I use firefox), and gives me random "you've won!" sound files even when it doesn't open a new page. startup also boots me right into a BCwipe window, and usually into the SoundMax control panel too. very strange.

I've just downloaded OTL and I'll run it now; I thought I'd upload the Malabytes log first in case I crash again....

Hi,

Not being able to post long files is typical of a newer infection. I need you to try and run GMER with Files checked. If it bluescreens, try it with just Sections checked. You can also try in safe mode if you're still having problems.

Okay, I'll try to run GMER with files only or sections only, in a minute. Meanwhile, I tried to post just the OTL.txt, but got a message saying my post was too long...so is that a bleepingcomputer limitation, not a result of my virus?

thanks!

PS argh! just tried to upload the OTL.txt as an attachment, but it's a bit over a beg....how can I get it to you, if I can't post or attach it?

Just skip the OTL log for now, right now all I need is the GMER log.

sheesh...I just ran GMER on safe mode w/ only "files" checked, and it ran for over 4 hours, then told me that it hadn't found any system modifications.

by the way, should I have used OTL's "fix" button? I didn't. Also, in my task manager processes, I keep seeing something called m3hh6nqw.exe but I can't find reference to that anywhere when I do a search. is that the culprit, or part of it?

I'll try running GMER on safe mode w/ only "sections" checked now, but I suspect that will crash it pretty quickly (since files AND sections crashed it quickly, and apparently files wasn't the problem). so this may be the only useful GMER info....

Nope, I was wrong--this time the safe-mode sections scan simply said "GMER found no system modifications".

What next?

thanks!

Hmm OK, let's give this one a shot.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your Desktop.NOTE: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved and renamed following this process directly to your desktop
  1. If you are using Firefox, make sure that your download settings are as follows:
    • Tools->Options->Main tab
    • Set to "Always ask me where to Save the files".
  2. During the download, rename Combofix to Combo-Fix as follows:

  3. It is important you rename Combofix during the download, but not after.
  4. Please do not rename Combofix to other names, but only to the one indicated.
  5. Close any open browsers.
  6. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don''t know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
  7. Double click on combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.
  8. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  9. Please post C:\Combo-Fix.txt in your next post.
**Note: Do not click the ComboFix window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

I tried to download the BC version; it failed. I tried the other one; it failed too (both suggested I try another location than the desktop). It may have been because of mcafee--I got 2 alerts about trojans right after each download.

but now when I try to download, the files on the 2 servers can't be found (I turned off my firewall). I just get messages like this:

Firefox can't find the file at http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe.

Try disabling McAfee before you download it, then see if you can get it working.
