Hello jazzpaul and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Remove these installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
StopSign (or eAcceleration StopSign)
Step #2

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StopSignStatus] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\Installer\stopsinfo.dll",VerifyStatus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webscan] C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\stopsignav.exe -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [v7itcuu9] C:\WINDOWS\system32\v7itcuu9.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [StopSignStatus] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\Installer\stopsinfo.dll",VerifyStatus /ro

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\v7itcuu9.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #7

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Thanks for your help so far...I've still got some problems. The computer is deathly slow and several keys have stopped working. Judging from it's behavior, I'm still thinking that there are some issues.

AFter running Yahoo! Anti Spy, it's still catching Cydoor TOPicks but is not able to delete it.

I've run Housecall and PandaACtiveScan and both said that I am in the clear.

You suggested that I delete the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\v7itcuu9.exe...I couldn't find that one....I foud C:\WINDOWS\system32\v7itcuu9.ii ...should I delete that.

After startup...I received the following error...
Error loadig c:\programfiles\commofiles\eacceleratio\istaller\stopsinfo.dll. The specified module could ot e foud.

As you proaly notice...my keyoard is ot workig right ow...intermittatly happes.

Hi jazzpaul. I think the keyboard problem is a hardware issue. I have never heard of any type of infection affecting a keyboard. If it is failing you might want to swap it out for a known good one or for a new one to verify that it is bad.

As for the log, most of the entries are still present but if the files were deleted or not found then that is probably due to AdWatch. Let's disable that and redo the fix.

We need to disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
    • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
    • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\blank.htm
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iexplore.exe] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [StopSignStatus] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\Installer\stopsinfo.dll",VerifyStatus
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [webscan] C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\Anti-Virus\stopsignav.exe -k
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [v7itcuu9] C:\WINDOWS\system32\v7itcuu9.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [StopSignStatus] Rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\eAcceleration\Installer\stopsinfo.dll",VerifyStatus /ro

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hello again OT, and thanks for your help so far...

I did exactly as you said, however I am unable to get my computer to reboot or turn off. If I click on "restart" or "turn off", nothing happens. This is new... I had to manually power off the tower.

Also, annoyingly a window keeps popping up from :

"SBC DSL CONNECTION MANAGER NOTICE. The following update is available:In the very near future, the SBC DSL Connection Manager will be retired in favor of newer support technology. The SBC DSL Connection Manager program will need to be replaced by the SBC Self Support Tool. Select 'Update' to begin the software conversion process."
It has the option to update or skip. I've tried to update before, only to have it tell me that I already have the latest version, and within a few minutes it pops up again. If I choose to skip it, it only keeps popping up. I've isolated the process in my task manager...it's CFD.EXE. I've ended it before...but it's back.

Here's my HT log:

Hi jazzpaul. As far as the HijackThis log goes it is clean. There are no signs of viruses or malware at this time.

As far as the other 2 issues go I would suggest that you contact SBC regarding their software. They should be able to walk you through properly changing over their connection software. I'm not sure what they are currently using now.

For the shutdown issue, I would say that that can be handled in the Windows XP forum. They are the ones who deal with operating system and configuration issues. It sounds like either a hardware issues with the power management or a configuration issue with the APM configuration. It does not appear to be related to any sort of malware issue.

Now we have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set here.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • CHECK Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good anti-virus, and you should also have a good firewall for blocking unwanted access to and from your computer. These also are free for personal use:It is best to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

Hello again OT,

I have been away for a few weeks, but the problems persist. The computer is still painfully slow. CydoorTopicks is still showing up in a scan, but I'm unable to remove it completely. Also, the computer "clicks" as if another page is trying to come up. This can happen anytime, even with all pages closed, at desktop. Also noticed something else that is new...my cursor flashes very quickly and erratically.

Also, I with "Ad-Aware" and "RegBlock" I always find a suspicious program called BDE. I remove it and it reappears everytime. Should I be concerned about this?

I thank you for your help so far. I think I'm still missing something though. Any ideas?

Here's a current HT log...

Thanks again!

Hi jazzpaul. I don't see any problems in the HijackThis log. It is clean. Just to be safe, let's run 1 other scanner and see if it picks up anything that HijackThis might not.

Download WinPFind.zip and unzip the contents to the C:\ folder.

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the c:\winpfind\winpfind.exe file and double-click it to run it. Now click the Start Scan button to begin the scan.

When the scan is complete reboot normally and post the WinPFind.txt file (located in the WinPFind folder) back here along with a new HijackThis log and I will review the information when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hi jazzpaul. Everything looks fine in both logs. They are both clean. If speed is still an issue then I would say pop over to the Windows Xp forum and post a question there and let them suggest some configuration changes. There does not appear to be any problems with viruses or malware at this time.

Cheers.
