My brother picked up a new computer on black friday (about 6 months ago). It is a Toshiba Satellite L505-S5990, with Windows 7 Home Premium. The STOP error problem began pretty soon after he got it, but it hasn't created enough of an issue to him to bother him, as he has another laptop he can use. I told him I would try to investigate it for him to see if it might be something he might have to return or exchange the computer itself for.

The STOP error might occur when more than 1 webpage is opened at a time. I'm not 100% positive, though. I asked him, and he just shrugged, lol (he's obviously SUPER helpful!). Since I've taken the computer, I've gotten the error once or twice and that was the only "common" cause I could think of that could possibly overload it and cause it to happen.

I believe the stop error was 0x00000000c5. It will only appear for a second or two before shutting the computer down. I searched online and found this site:
http://aumha.org/a/stop.php#0xc5 (if I'm not allowed to post that, I'm sorry!). From what I gathered it can occur when I've installed new software. At the time, everything on the computer would be considered new. Other than the antivirus program I put on here (Avast!), I don't think anything at all has been added to the computer. I also checked for updated drivers, as the site suggested, however I honestly don't know what I am looking for. For this computer alone I found (total) 63 different updates on Toshiba's website. I don't want to install them all if they are unnecessary (I actually started to do so, but the first one I clicked took over an hour by itself. Considering the amount of updates, I really don't want to spend weeks downloading all of them - especially if they aren't the root of the problem).

Thank you for any suggestions!!

From the link you provided: An attempt occurred to touch invalid memory at a process IRQL that is too high. This is almost always caused by drivers that have corrupted the system pool. If you’ve recently installed any new software, check to see if it’s properly installed; and check for updated drivers on the manufacturer’s web site.

It is saying that it's possible you have downlevel drivers. Are there any drivers that were installed after purchase that didn't come with the computer? An example might be a driver for a peripheral such as a printer, mouse, wifi device etc... I would want to make sure that all those types of drivers are the latest Win 7 compatible drivers.

I will ask him to be sure, but I don't think so. I know he doesn't have a printer because he has come over to use mine before, and he prefers the touchpad vs a mouse with laptops so I doubt he'd install that. He basically only uses his computers for visiting websites like craigslist, and that's really it. He doesn't need/use a computer for school or work, so I can't think of much else he would have needed to install. I don't think he installed a wifi device? I'll ask, though. I am on my computer, otherwise I would nose around to see if I could find anything that could have been installed post-purchase.

Thank you for your help, though. You helped narrow down what I should be looking for. I had read it to possibly mean a problem related to an installed program such as a game or something. I am not well versed in what certain terms and phrases actually mean relating to computers so it did confuse me. I hadn't thought of the problem being related to Windows 7. I still use Windows XP on my computer, I seem to forget how "new" 7 is, and that some programs may not have caught up with putting out the compatible software/drivers for it.

If anyone else may have had the same problem, or you know of a direct solution, I would appreciate the help. I will go back to the computer and check out what may have incompatible drivers for Windows 7.

Thanks!

If the system is only 6 months old and nothing new has been installed, then I would contact Toshiba tech support for help. It should still be under warranty. Maybe they have uncovered that issue and have issued new drivers to fix it.

You can examine/post the detail of STOP errors by the following:

Download/install BlueScreenView - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.htm.

Double-click BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.

When scanning is done, Edit/Select All...then File/Save Selected Items. Save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content and paste it into your next reply.

Well...all of your errors produce the same error message, which is unusual in my world.

0x000000c5, Strolln already provided input on that.

Have you looked in Device Manager...to see if there are indications of driver problems?

If it were me...I would uninstall all hardware drivers...and then reinstall same from the drivers CD which came with the system.

Problem is...your hardware drivers are not the only possible culprits...many programs also have drivers installed and XP has drivers installed. Any of these could become damaged and cause problems.

Not to mention the possibility of malware.

In addition to taking a look in Device Manager...I would take a good look at all tabs on Event Viewer, looking for clues as to what needs attention. The only items requiring user action are reflected as "error" under the Type column of EV.

How To Use Event Viewer - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/40108/how-to-use-event-viewer/

Post the detail (can be seen by double-clicking the line item) for the last 5 errors in Event Viewer, please.

Please feel free to disregard this thread. While I appreciate the help, I realize everyone here is quite busy. Since this laptop is still under warranty I've decided to let Toshiba take the brunt of the headache of fixing it and any further problems there may be with it, while the warranty is still viable. Plus, I don't want to waste anyones time on here helping me fix something I could (and should) be using the warranty for - I would much prefer someones time and assistance be put to use towards someone who doesn't have an alternative source of help.

On a side note, I would like to add that while this computer has a lot of nice features, I wouldn't recommend it. There have been quite a few problems in the short time since its purchase. When comparing it to my laptop and the two others in my house, I would think the newest one would be considered the most reliable. I have to pay more attention to this laptop than I do my own, and my laptop is a 2005 VAIO. Maybe I have high hopes, but I would prefer to spend my time maintaining my much more reliable VAIO than I would towards a nearly unused laptop!

Anyhow, I've started posting on Toshiba's laptop forums, in case someone who is having similar issues comes across this thread in search of an answer.

Thank you

----

edit - hamluis - all my drivers report no problems. Malware *shouldn't* be the culprit, but I wouldn't rule it out. I only say shouldn't because of the lack of use of this computer. I didn't see your reply before I originally posted my reply above. I appreciate the time you've taken to help me!

It's a laptop, it's under warranty...that's probably the best route to take with it.

I suggest that you print out this thread...and use it when you submit the system for repair under warranty. It may not help, but it will provide tracks that someone can see where you've been...without your reiterating it all over again .

Good luck :flowers:.
