I started having problems a couple of weeks ago with people getting spam e-mails that had my e-mail address on them. I have downloaded Malwarebytes and got rid of some stuff, and have rerun my Webroot spyware stuff, as well as removing all my contacts from my account. I'm still having problems with my computer locking up, so I followed the tutorial and have tried to run GMER so I can post a log to get help. However, my computer has been locking up while running GMER. Tonight I tried again, and this time I got a blue screen error with the following in it:

A problem has been detected.............
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

Technical info:
*** STOP: 0x0000004e (0x0000009a, 0x00031096, 0x00000001, 0x00000000)

Can someone tell me what I need to do next?

Thanks!

Hello and welcome.

GMER.. try running GMER in safe mode.
-- If GMER crashes or keeps resulting in a BSODs, uncheck Devices on the right side before scanning[/color][/i].

Please post the Malwarebytes log for review.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.

Next run ATF and SAS: If you cannot access Safe Mode, run in normal ,but let me know.

Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

From your regular user account..
Download Attribune's ATF Cleaner and then SUPERAntiSpyware , Free Home Version. Save both to desktop ..
DO NOT run yet.
Open SUPER from icon and install and Update it
Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining
.
Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program. DO NOT run yet.

Now reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode
.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox or Opera browser click that browser at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program
.

NOW Scan with SUPER
Open from the desktop icon or the program Files list
On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
Perform a Complete scan. After scan,Verify they are all checked.
Click OK on the summary screen to quarantine all found items.
If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Hi,Dorothy,this was real good.
after SAS completes and you post the log... Reboot to normal mode ..
Rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) like this:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates, when done
click Scanner tab, select FULL scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

I do not use Gamevance, but it appears to be loaed with malwares , Ad ware amd spyware.
Is the Rebates item something you need?
Go into your Control Panel add/remove programs and uninstall all the toolbars you find.

I don't see anything on the control panel for GameVance, and when I do a search for "GameVance", the only place it is found is in the Malware/DDS logs. How can I get rid of this - I honestly don't know what it is either.

Thanks for all your help!!!!

Hi D,
Its not unusual to receive such an error after using specialized fix tools.

A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.

Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)
Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.
Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.
Right-click on the entry and choose delete. C:\PROGRA~1\AskSBar\bar\1.bin\AskSBar.dll <<--Kill dll

Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

I believe you must have installed DDS some where.

This removes many tools and the things they leave behind,
Please download OTCleanIt and save to your Desktop.
  • Connect to the Internet and double-click on the file to launch the program.
  • Click on the green CleanUp! button.
  • If you get a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the Internet, please allow the connection.
  • When it has finished, OTCleanIt will ask you to reboot so it can remove itself.
-- Note: Doing this will remove any specialized tools (including this one) downloaded and used. All other programs should be kept on your machine and used on a regular basis.

EDIT: Repaired faulty link

I downloaded Autoruns and got that cleaned up. The link for OTCleanIt.exe doesn't work - I get a webpage not found error. I'm trying to find the right page, but haven't so far - will continue looking.

I have run OTCleanIt - is there anything else I need to do, or am I cured (for now)?

Thanks for all the help - everything has been very easy to understand.

Dorothy

Ok thanks, I fixed that link.
One last thing to do.

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been backed up, renamed and saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

Vista and Windows 7 users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point in Vista or Windows 7 and Disk Cleanup in Vista.

OK, I finished all the steps and got my new restore point. I'm guessing this means my laptop is clean (for now). One last question - I have an external hard drive that I backed up everything on prior to starting all these fixes, so I'm sure it needs to be cleaned so I don't reinfect my computer. Any advice on how to do this easily - it's a 500G Seagate portable drive. I have not had it plugged in to my laptop since I started fixing stuff.

Thanks for all your help - you've been great!!!!!!!!
