This virus seems to be slow when the computer starts. As soon as the browser window is opened, it seems to kick in full throttle. Closing the browser window does not slow this virus down and block the CPU almost 100%. I tried scanning with Ad-aware, avast, spybot; Spybot removed some cookies and that was all. I still see the issue. Here is the Hijackthis log.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hi,

I followed the instructions to generate the DDS and Attach files. But I was not able to generate the GMER log - I tried it at least 4-5 times but my computer would simply freeze after a few minutes into scanning. I dont know the reason. I had to do a forced shutdown with the power button every time.

Here is the DDS log text. I have attached the "Attach.txt" log to this response.

Hello.

You log looks clean at a quick look. Let's see what we can find.

Use Task Manager to Check Processes
Often, certain processes will hog huge amounts of CPU and slow down your computer. We can use Task Manager to identify them.
  • Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard to open your Task Manager.
  • Select the Processes tab.
  • Check to see what process(es) are taking up large amounts of CPU (not memory). List them along with how much CPU they were taking.
You may want to take a screenshot of the Task Manager screen. Save the file as JPG.

Download and Run Scan with RootRepeal
We will use RootRepeal to scan for rootkits.
  • Open RootRepeal.exe on your desktop. If you are using Windows Vista, right click RootRepeal.exe and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click the Report tab.
  • Click the Scan button.
  • Check all seven boxes.
  • Push Ok
  • Check the box for your main system drive (Usually C:), and press Ok.
  • Allow RootRepeal to run a scan of your system. This may take some time.
  • Once the scan completes, push the button. Save the log to your desktop, using a distinctive name, such as RootRepeal.txt. Include this report in your next reply, please.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hi,

I have attached the report from "RootRepeal" and the print screen of the Windows Task Manger.

here is some information if it helps ..... I have tried to tune the performance in the past by killing unnecessary procedures and had been successful. But this virus keeps changing the CPU usage on various existing processes and blocks the CPU completely. The applications which I know are not actively accessed suddenly show up as using 36% of the CPU and then fall to zero. The virus distributes the usage amongst 2-3 processes or applications. By the time I click on that process/application to kill it, it falls to zero and something else goes up to 30-40%. Thus, the CPU usage would rotate on known applications and processes.

Hello.

Which browser causes the slowness?

Let's try disabling the startup items.

Fix HijackThis Entries
  • Double click the HijackThis icon on your desktop. If you are using Windows Vista, right click dss.exe and select Run as Administrator.
  • Close all other open windows.
  • Select Do a System Scan Only.
  • To the left of each entry you will see a box.Put a checkmark next to the following entries:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime -Delay
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Broadcom Wireless Manager UI] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] %ProgramFiles%\SigmaTel\C-Major Audio\WDM\stsystra.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SynTPEnh] C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\SynTPEnh.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ProcessLassoManagementConsole] C:\Program Files\Process Lasso\processlasso.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ProcessGovernor] C:\Program Files\Process Lasso\processgovernor.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrojanScanner] C:\Program Files\Trojan Remover\Trjscan.exe /boot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpybotSD TeaTimer] C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

  • Close all open windows except HijackThis.
  • Click and OK at the prompt.
  • Close HijackThis.

Restart your computer. Does the slowness still occur after?

With Regards,
The Panda

Hi,

I tried cleaning yesterday as you suggested but the same problem occurred this morning I have attached the screen shots of the task manager. I dont know which process is completely blocking the CPU and if its hidden or not. I did notice at times that it activates when I browse the internet.

Hello SWBA.

Which browser causes the slowness? Is it Chrome, FireFox, or Internet Explorer?

all three and today was the worst day. I noticed that the virus triggers as soon as I try to browse the internet and blocks the CPU completely. I am also noticing weird errors pop up which appear in authentic Windows popups.

Hello.

Let's see what we can find.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with the tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.
With Regards,
The Panda
