I'm running windows vista sp 1 32-bit system. It occurs with all my programs and although I noticed it this morning, I didn't think it was anything too serious. I would appreciate it if somebody could get me in the right direction with it's recovery.

Your file associations are probably messed up. This can be caused by a malware infection.
