Hi, there~ My computer is infected with XP Defender. It made itself known last night. I have been through your preparation steps, though it will not allow me to install a firewall, or turn the Windows firewall back on. I was able to run dds, but it will not let me run gmer.

Having done a little research, I've found at least one thread where this has been dealt with on these forums. I'm hoping you can help me. Thanks in advance, and I'm anxiously awaiting the bleepingcomputer cavalry... heart.gif

Here is the dds log:

Hi there, EB!

Thanks for taking the time to help me out. It's much appreciated.

Here's the deal currently:

The morning after I posted here, my AVG caught the trojan in a regular scan. When I went to my computer that morning, it asked me to restart, which I did. The problem seemed to be gone. I checked the AVG scan results, and it said it removed and healed a trojan called "SHeur3.RLA".

Great. I'm doing a small happy dance, because I almost everything seems intact. I had a few scary moments when I tried to open Word via my desktop and the start menu, and it gave me an error message (C:\windows\system32\rundll32.exe Application Not Found) but I can get into Word and Excel through existing documents, and they seem to work fine.

When I try to start Firefox, I get this message: Application not found C:\Programfiles\java\jrele\lib\deploy\jqs\ff\..\..\..bin\jqsnotify.exe

No idea what that means, except that something important seems to be missing?

Also, other problems now include the fact that I can't install programs (like a firewall, which is pretty important, yes?) I can't access the Windows security center at all from my profile. It seems to be operational, along with everything else, on my daughter's profile. There, I can see that the firewall portion is set to self-monitoring, but I can't change it from her profile, because she is not the administrator.

I am thinking maybe just building a new profile for myself and deleting the old one may solve my problems? Or is there an easier way?

I could run dds, but when I tried to run gmer, I got a window asking me which program to open it with. What should I do?

Here's the dds text log:

Hello.

Your file associations are broken, that's why you couldn't run GMER. AS regarding the profile, no need to create a new one. That error is when the file is gone and the remaining registry entry is still there, we'll deal with that, no worries. smile.gif

Please do the following...

Go to Start > My Computer
Go to Tools > Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Untick the following:
  • Hide extensions for known file types
  • Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
You will get a message warning you about showing protected operating system files, click Yes
Make sure this option is selected:
  • Show hidden files and folders
Click Apply and then click OK

Download and Run OTM
  1. Please download OTM by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  2. Now re-name OTM.exe to OTM.com. (Notice how the extension is no longer .exe and now it should run if you double-click on OTM.com)
  3. Double click the icon on your desktop If you are running on Vista, right click on the file and choose Run As Administrator.
  4. Paste the following code under the area. Do not include the word "Code".
    CODE
    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.exe]
    @="exefile"
    :Commands
    [CREATERESTOREPOINT]
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
  5. Click the large button.
  6. If OTM requires are reboot, please allow it to do so.
  7. Copy/Paste the contents under the line here in your next reply.
Note: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Then, after running that OTM script if GMER.exe still doesn't work, do the same thing and re-name the extension of it to GMER.com and try it.

Post the logs once done.
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

Okay, EB. I need a little hand-holding here. I downloaded OTM. I renamed it. I ran it. It looked different than in the description, and there was no "big button", just three that were the same size. I clicked the "Move files" one. Everything on my desktop went away, causing my heart to stop temporarily. I wasn't asked to restart, but I did anyway, because I waited 10 minutes with no apparent change.

I went into notepad to copy and paste the log contents, but there was nothing in the folder.

What to do now?

Go ahead with the GMER scan.

Sorry for the previous instruction that wasn't clear. You were suppose to press the large Move It button, which it seems you did. However, the desktop disappearing was strange, however, I think that didn't affect any files since we didn't touch that at all, may have just been the explorer process that was ended.

Post the log once done.

Happy Monday to you, EB!

Still having some problems following your directions. I was able to change GMER to GMER.com and run it. Problem is, when I try to save the file, it hangs up somewhere, and I get the timer-symbol-of-eternal-torment. Then I have to restart, but I lose the log results. I've taken a picture of the screen with my iphone, and I actually wrote down everything on the page, as well, since I couldn't get the copy function to work.

I can attach the pic (IDK if that's possible here) or I could type out what I have written down. Let me know what you want me to do.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Sure, feel free to attach the image file here.

Let's skip the GMER scan for now.

Hello.

Does your .exe files work now?

Can I please see a new set of DDS logs.

Then, run Malwarebytes.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

For complete or visual instructions on installing and running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware please read this link

Re-name it like before if it doesn't work to the .com extension.

Let me know how it goes.
Note: Please do not PM me asking for help, instead please post it in the correct forum requesting for help. Help requests via the PM system will be ignored.

If I'm helping you and I don't reply within 48 hours please feel free to send me a PM.

Hi, Extreme Boy smile.gif

Thanks for the help! IDK if my .exe files are working. I assume that means that if I click on Word, it should work, right? Instead of giving me an error message? If that's the case, then NO. They are not working. sad.gif I'll work on running Malwarebytes.

Here's a new DDS log:

Okay. It won't let me run the M-bam setup.exe file. It says "application not found." mad.gif

Hello.

Try what I mentioned earlier with re-naming the extension of .exe files you try to run to something else like:

name.com

Let me know.

Okay. smile.gif

Let's take this slowly...

Please do what I mentioned in this post (Post #4) again: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...t&p=1724546

Once you have done that, download the mbam-setup.exe file from the link I gave above.

Once it's download successfully. Re-name it by right-clicking on the mbam-setup.exe file and select rename. Now re-name it to something with a different extension to: mbam.com.

Now double-click on mbam.com and try running it. If it doesn't work let me know.
