I am using a laptop with a USB mouse and a couple of days ago it stopped working. I am thinking the kids did something but I can't work out what they did.
The scroll works on it but it won't move the pointer and I hate using the pad on the LT!!

There is also Synaptics Pointing Device in the tray, which I am sure wasn't there before!

Any clues?

Synaptics Pointing Device...is the pad.

My laptop has both the pad and the mouse enabled...so I don't see a conflict of one with the other.

I would try some other USB device...if that failed to work, I'd uninstall the USB controllers (just the controllers) via Device Manager.

Start/Run...type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter.
