My PC didn't come with a recovery disc, so I tried using my friend's instead. The problem is, I had Home Basic, whereas he has Premium. Now my Compaq is listed as a Dell and I can't enter my product key due to the version differences. What can I do to resolve this?

You Still Have The Choice Of Installling Home Basic over The Premium install , if you are just looking for a serial no one will give it. You coluld download a NON ACTIVATED ISO off a torrent site or request a CD off compaq. The Dell & Compaq have no influence on if the product key works.

Your compaq should have a recovery partition.

Suggestions like this can only lead to more issues. The downloaded ISO could be infected with all sorts of malware.

And if the recovery partition has been borked, you can request recovery or reinstallation disks the folks you ordered it from.

Note that Dell issues a reinstallation disc with special codes for their systems on it. It will not work on someone else's computer.
