The problem:
Windowsupdate program fails with 'Internet explorer cannot display the webpage'
Running explorer v8 - other websites are accessable. Firefox seems to works ok.
The PC was infected by a virus and i dont believe its all gone yet.
Any idea what this may be

The PC was infected by virus that disabled the firewall and virus checks, seemed to hang up and run slowly. I loaded what i thought was a pc tools and landed up with the bogus tool - great.
After getting rid of the bogus tool and reinstalling IE8, and the Microsoft security tool this has removed a number of the viruses including alureon. Then used AVG which seemed to find a few more.
