Hi there, I have a Google redirect virus. It is the usual thing that redirects you to a different site when you click on a Google link.
I have scanned with AVG 9. SuperAntiSpyware, Hitman Pro, TDSSkiller and Malwarebytes anti-malware.
Only TDSSkiller picks up anything and it says the rootkit will be removed upon reboot but when the laptop is rebooted the problem is still there.
I have now disabled the CD emulation software with Defogger. I have run the DDS and got the results.
Now here is the next problem i have. I have run the GMER scan but after a while scanning a blue screen appears saying that my laptop is shutting down due to an unexpected error. I will keep trying this to see if i can get any further. So obviously i can't attach the Ark.txt log because up to now i haven't got one. I will post it if i am able.
That's about it at the moment, thanks in advance for your help.
Alan.

EDIT: I have now attached the Ark.txt log but the only way i could get the scan to complete was to do it in safe mode so i don't know if this is of any help or not.

Here's the DDS data.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer! welcome.gif

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Hi there, Thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately i still have the redirect problem.

I have a Google redirect virus. It is the usual thing that redirects you to different sites when you click on a Google search link.
Since my first post AVG has picked up a couple of trojans which i have deleted.
I have now disabled the CD emulation software with Defogger. I have run the DDS and got the results.
I have had to run the GMER scan in safe mode as it shuts down my laptop when run in normal mode

Here's the new DDS data.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

Hi there Myrti,

Thanks for getting back to me.
I would appreciate it if you could assist me with the cleaning of my machine.
I am going to reformat and reinstall the OS in the near future but i don't have access to an external hard-drive for the next few weeks to back up my data so that is why i am going for the clean-up option at this moment in time.
I have run Combofix and the log is posted below.
Massive thanks again for your assistance.

Hi myrti,

Thanks again for the attention to my problem. thumbup2.gif

I can report that I have not encountered the Google redirect virus again since running Combofix.

I have been running AVG 9.0 and it has picked up one peice of Adware and got rid of it since the Combofix.

I have just run ESET OnlineScan as you suggested and it has picked up and deleted two infections. Here is a copy of the details below.

C:\Program Files\Free Mp3 Wma Ogg Converter\zwunzi-ZwunziTS.exe a variant of Win32/Adware.OneStep.F application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\drivers\pcmcia.sys.vir Win32/Olmarik.XG trojan cleaned - quarantined

Thank you yet again and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Alan.

Hi,

the logs are looking clean, before we round things up and remove the programs we used, I'd like you to update your Adobe Reader to the latest version.
Your Adobe Reader is out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed additional downloads unless you really want them.
Let me know if you run into any problems doing this.

regards myrti

Hi,

happy to hear! smile.gif Since your logs are clean, all that is left to do is to remove the programs we used.

Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  1. Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  2. Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  3. If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
