I saw similar postings here and noted that people were successfully helped removing whatever the rootkit/malware was.

This problem happened when i browsed to site coming up in a google search (i don't recall the site). what i do remember is that a java applet started and i tried to close the window, but it wouldn't and popped up a new window which also wouldn't close. Since that event, any google search link i click on (whether from IE or Firefox) brings up some random ecommerce/spam site. Further, i tried performing a system restore, yet no prior dates are available from the wizard, probably meaning the malware has protected itself from being undone. System restore points were not available from either normal or safe mode boot.

I have followed all the prep instructions and have pasted/attached the reports. I should note that GMER could only be run successfully from safe mode.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there smile.gif

Not a problem. I mainly wanted to be sure you still needed help before I dug in here. wink.gif

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! smile.gif

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

If ComboFix will not run the first time, then rename ComboFix.exe to Wineguy.exe and try it again. smile.gif

Thanks,
tea

Heh....bibbity bobbity boo! laugh.gif

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 17.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u17-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

StartupFolder: c:\docume~1\alluse~1\startm~1\programs\startup\acroba~1.lnk - c:\program files\adobe\acrobat 6.0 <-----WAY out of date and very vulnerable!!

The following will uninstall ComboFix and will implement some cleanup procedures:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste, or type the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /uninstall

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

Hello,

You're welcome. smile.gif

The only other things I would suggest would be a little housekeeping :

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

If your scans are coming up clear, and if the system is running well, then I believe we're done. Keep an eye on things for a couple of days and I'll leave this thread open, though I doubt you'll have any problems. thumbup2.gif

Take care!

tea, thanks again. everything appears in order. i do get a strange window upon reboot everytime that says "the system must be restarted for changes to take effect", with no clue as to what the changes or program(s) are. i have clicked both 'yes' and 'no' and it still comes up. in any case, only seems to be a nuisance. i also tossed you a (very) small contribution via paypal for your help. i'm unemployed now but your advice has been invaluable in getting me through this.

Aw, thank you. in_love.gif Don't you worry even a little bit. I appreciate it, and I appreciate the kind words just as much. smile.gif

That message you're getting could be given for the installer of any number of legitimate programs. In fact, I did a search for the term, and every one on the front page are from Microsoft programs. My suggestion would be to try and coordinate anything you might have installed around the time this started happening to find the culprit. thumbup2.gif
