synaptics pointing device driver?

what is is exactly and is it essential to my laptops fuctionality? if I remove it will it harm my pc or if I need a specific driver can I just go to manufacturers site?

The pointing device driver...allows notebook users to use that small area on the laptop...in the same way that some use a mouse.

Me, I prefer a mouse. Sooo...if I remove mine from my laptop, there's no impact. If I used that area on the laptop, I would not remove the drivers for it, unless I thought that the drivers were damaged and needed to be replaced.

Chances are, replacement drivers are available for download at the website of the laptop manufacturer.
