So, I was carrying my laptop in a duffel bag a few weeks ago, and accidentally dropped it a good couple of feet onto the ground. Nothing seemed broken at first, but several days later, I noticed that I wasn't able to rip music from a CD in the drive. Sure enough, in My Computer, there is no recognition of there even being a CD drive. Assuming that my dropping the laptop was to blame, what are my options, if any, for fixing the drive?. If it's something else, would a registry edit be able to solve the problem? Thanks for anyone who has advice or suggestions.

No, if hardware was broken, it will have to be repaired or replaced. There is nothing in the operating system you can do.

You have 2 options: buy a new optical drive and replace it yourself...or take it to a PC shop and pay them to do it. If it were me, I would just do it myself. But that's up to you.
