Corrupted data files. Only able to operate in Safe Mode

I can only run my machine (OS: Windows XP Prof. 5.1 SP3) in safe mode. When I try to start Windows XP in normal mode I get the blue screen after a few minutes and a message that says “Driver IRQL not less or equal” and then a series of Stop codes.

This situation started after I had been using the hibernate option for a few days. After I had shut down fully and restarted I got a message stating that Windows had successfully installed the following update: Microsoft Browser Choice Screen Update for EEA Users of Windows XP (KB976002). At the same time I got a Microsoft Security Centre message telling me that McAfee Virus protection was not operating. Then my computer crashed and I got the blue screen.
It may be relevant that a week earlier I had received a pop-up advertising virus protection. When I tried to close it, it started to download so I closed my browser quickly and ran both a McAfee and Malwarebytes scan. The Malwarebytes found and dealt with the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks\{4d25f926-b9fe-4682-bf72-8ab8210d6d75} (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Folders Infected:
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe (Adware.MyWebSearch) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
Files Infected:
(No malicious items detected)
I have tried to restore my system to earlier dates but on each occasion I get a message telling me the attempt has been unsuccessful. I have also tried restoring the system to the last known configuration that worked but this was also unsuccessful.
The event viewer has lots of red errors listed. I have reproduced some of them below:

The KService service hung on starting.
