hi everyone...first of all, kudos for such an amazing resource. i've used results of other cleanups/fixes in the past and helped lots of friends and family clean their systems.

as luck would have it , though, i have finally succumbed to a nasty infection myself. this occured first on my (formerly) most-used computer, a few weeks ago, and i was able to do the fixreg + mbam fix and all is well.

i transitioned to another computer while taking care of that one, and i've used it daily for about a month. in the past week, i've gotten hit with the google/yahoo redirects , but malwarebytes , hijackthis, and even combofix are mum. the infection does not infect executables, but it got pretty deep into acrobat--some of the redirected pages would try to download & open a pdf file, acrotray would constantly run, and "normal" pdfs opened in the browser would choke.

i guess the particularly tough one i have now is payback for all the ones i've eradicated! mad.gif

oddly the weird behavior began when opening up an avi file with vlc. VLC loaded slowly and seemed to freeze. since then, it sometimes opens in some weird control-less mode but i've managed to at least get it back. for now, i have uninstalled VLC.

i'm sure i was also using pdfs at the time so this may not have anything to do with it. i always have some pdf or another open--its how i do a lot of my work.

so both firefox and iexplorer had this issue. whats worse, iexplore would often popup items totally on its own, without me going to google.

upon advice in another thread, i did a kaspersky scan. this was the first tool to alert me of any issues at all. it found the following issues in my outlook express inbox archive:

Infected: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.xgg
Infected: Trojan.Win32.Agent.ajcd
Infected: Email-Worm.Win32.Zhelatin.aht
Infected: Trojan-Dropper.Win32.Agent.zdw
Infected: Trojan.Win32.Agent.asli
Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen
Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Bredolab.se
Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Bredolab.wg
Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Bredolab.aue

this one was in my firefox profiles cache folder:
Infected: Exploit.JS.Pdfka.byp

outlook express is used to check a catch-all address i have for registrations, orders, etc....anything i dont want touching the addresses i use on a daily basis. i get tons of spam and quickly delete anything i catch. OE is also configured not to load anything by default.

since this is not mission-critical, i have kinda gotten rid of the inbox with those infections. i tried deleting that firefox cache but then firefox would no longer open so i uninstalled it.
i uninstalled firefox totally, but a clean reinstall of a version i had on another hard drive (and subsequently updated once installed) resulted with the same issue straightaway.

however, a re-run of kaspersky took even longer than the ~2 hours of the original scan and my whole browser froze before it ended.

after a lot of back and forth, attempted fixes, and painful google searches, i am now coming to you all for help.

i regularly monitor my running processes via process explorer and task manager, and i keep an eye on the "run" registry containers. the only thing out of the ordinary that's come up is wuauclt running on and on, over and over, without coming up with updates, and this has persisted even though i disabled automatic updates.

i constantly got bugged about adobe updates around this time, but each time it would ask me for the original installer file. since i didn't have it around, i had to wait until i could grab the cd and then update. the update did not even complete.

ok so rundown of versions n stuff:

adobe acrobat (full not just reader) 6
i also have adobe acrobat 7 that i should have updated to eons ago but i never got around to it. once this is over i'll install that version.

internet explorer 7
firefox 3.6.3
windows xp pro service pack 3

i hope the information i've provided is useful in helping with my case.

the ark file is too big on its own, so i had to zip it to attach. i hope this is ok.

thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Thanks for your response. Yes, the problem still exists.

As for a description, the initial post pretty much covers everything--have you found it insufficient?

Nothing has changed on the affected computer since my posting--I cannot use it in its current state.

I did, however, try a few times to run OTL on the day I posted. I saw that program recommended in a few replies, but the prep guide for posting specified that only the ark and attach files be added to my initial post. OTL just hangs and freezes.

EDIT I turned the computer on today and messed around a little and OTL now runs. Here is the result:

Hi,

the description is great, just needed to know the status you are currently in as well to see if anything evolved. First let me say that using an outdated PDF reader is a high risk today.
Support for Acrobat 7 ended in December, as far as I know. So far this year, there have been 4-5 critical vulnerabilities discovered which are used to infect you through your PDF-reader. Usually Acrobat and Adobe Reader are both affected.
It has become rather crucial to keep your system up to date, sadly.

Could you please run a new scan with gmer:
Please download a fresh copy of GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.

ok i will do this right now.
thanks for the tip on acrobat. i was using 6 and now i'll move to 7... but it is the latest i own.

do you think having a current copy of reader and configuring it for all things internet would be fine? then i could use acrobat 7 purely for pdf *creation/updating/etc*.

since it seems the issue is when pdfs are opened from the net?

Hi,

it should help yes. The problem is with opening PDFs no matter where they come from. However, if you configure the adobe reader to open PDFs by default it should definitely help.
Let me know how things evolve with gmer.

Hi,

you have been infected by a nasty rootkit. It is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to clean, then please run ComboFix and post the log in your next reply:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hi,

please run a scan with TDSSKiller next:
  • Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
  • Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
  • Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

  • If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
  • When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

regards myrti

ok so kaspersky took almost FOUR hours to run the scan tonight!

anyway before i posted originally, i'd uninstalled then reinstalled firefox because of the pdfka exploit in my Profile>Cache folder.

i re ran the scan tonight after we did the other fixes and this line is there again:

QUOTE
C:\Documents and Settings\xuserx\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\x3t89mxx.default\Cache\90BB61DEd01 Infected: Exploit.JS.Pdfka.byp 1

now i deleted the whole profile folder before and after that firefox wouldnt open. can i delete the items in the cache folder?

by the way i have NOT re-installed acrobat yet. it is killing me....but i dont want to exacerbate the issue before its fixed!
