Hello folks,

I thank you in advance for your time and expertise. I'll provide all the detail I can.
I was given a laptop that would no longer boot, and I was told the infection on it was trying to go online to spyware sites before it went down. This laptop is an HP with an AMD Vision 2GHz dual core, 3GB RAM, and a reasonably fast HD.

I powered up, launched startup repair, told it to use system restore, and after a restart, it seemed OK.
It is running Webroot Antivirus with SpySweeper.

Set up a wireless connection for updates, still no bad behavior.

I ran Malwarebytes on it, only found an evil "Hijack Display" registry key in quickscan, which it removed.
I'm attaching the log. Restarted, allowed changes.

HP Support Assistant wanted updates, update all, install. Java wanted to update, did so.

New HP Support Assistant gathering info, wanted updates, update all-install, ran malwarebytes in full scan mode, system freezes in middle of it all.

Logout, login - all's well. New HP Support assistant wanted updates, update all-install. Run Malwarebytes in fullscan mode, success to all...malwarebytes found no troubles.

Update Webroot (free with sub) and update win7. Still no bad behavior.
Ran Spybot Search and Destroy - found 17 entries, pertaining to the following malware;
Burstmedia
Casalemedia
Doubleclick
Fastclick
Mediaplex
Statcounter
All successfully removed, and innoculated IE against bad websites.

Restart, and run GMER, with no success. Can't check any of the pertinent boxes (A trip to gmer.net on
another machine shows win7 is not supported.)

At this time, Webroot starts to alert about the computer being blocked from contacting the following spyware ridden sites (among others, a LOT of others) -
2search.org
2-2005-search.com
008k.com
123topsearch.com
1987324.com

Shut off the wifi on the laptop - it stopped popping sites.
Tried Windows Defender - nothing
Tried SuperAntiSpyware - nothing
Restart, the machine runs chkdsk, 3-stage scan corrected a LOT of NTFS problems...
Tried IObit security360 - nothing
Tried Avast Free - nothing

So, ran DDS, attaching attach.txt as a zip, attaching a hijack this log as a zip, copy-pasta of dds.txt follows -

DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSX64

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    netsvcs
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
    activex
    drivers32
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

is that a bird?  a plane? nooo it's the flying blueberry!

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM! Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Hello Myrti,

Thanks so much for helping me!

The symptoms are that nothing shows in a/v tools, but intermittantly, when a net connection is available, it tries to hook up to various spyware sites. Webroot reports this, the browser doesn't open. I think that it may be hooking up to other places (like IRC) that webroot isn't catching.

I haven't done anything with it since last I posted, but HP Assistant has run, and it upgraded the Lightscribe software.

Other than that, and an interrupted Webroot scan (nothing found), it's been idle.

OK, I'm turning off realtime scanning in avast, IObit and Webroot (I know, shouldn't run more than 1 at once, not sure which ones to get rid of.)

Next, I'm running OTL all users with your provided script.

Hi,

did you use the "immunize" function of spybot? It sounds as if this may be a problem between spybot and webroot.

Gmer is not compatible with 64bit systems, the same goes for all known rootkits. The only rootkit scanner currently working on 64bit is sophos and that is what I woudl like you to use:
lease download Sophos Anti-rootkit & save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
Note: If using the vendor's download site you will be asked to register with MySophos so an email containing an activation link can be sent to your email address.

Be sure to print out and read the Sophos Anti-Rookit User Manual and Release Notes.
  • Double-click sar_15_sfx.exe to begin the installation, read the license agreement and click Accept.
  • Allow the default location of C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Rootkit and click Install.
  • A message will appear "Sophos Anti-Rootkit was successfully installed. Click 'yes' to start it now". Click Yes.
  • Make sure the following are checked:
    • Running processes
    • Windows Registry
    • Local Hard Drives
  • Click Start scan.
  • Sophos Anti-Rootkit will scan the selected areas and display any suspicious files in the upper panel.
  • When the scan is complete, a pop-up screen will appear with "Rootkit Scan Results". Click OK to continue.
  • Click on the suspicious file to display more information about it in the lower panel which also includes whether the item is recommended for removal.
    • Files tagged as Removable: No are not marked for removal and cannot be removed.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (clean up recommended) are marked for removal by default.
    • Files tagged as Removable: Yes (but clean up not recommended) are not marked for removal because Sophos did not recognize them. These files will require further investigation.
  • Select only items recommended for removal, then click "Clean up checked items". You will be asked to confirm, click Yes.
  • A pop up window will appear advising the cleanup will finish when you restart your computer. Click Restart Now.
  • After reboot, a dialog box displays the files you selected for removal and the action taken.
  • Click Empty list and then click Continue to re-scan your computer a second time to ensure everything was cleaned.
  • When done, go to Start > Run and type or copy/paste: %temp%\sarscan.log
  • This should open the log from the rootkit scan. Please post this log in your next reply. If you have a problem, you can find sarscan.log in C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Temp\.
Before performing an ARK scan it is recommended to do the following to ensure more accurate results and avoid common issues that may cause false detections.
  • Disconnect from the Internet or physically unplug you Internet cable connection.
  • Clean out your temporary files.
  • Close all open programs, scheduling/updating tasks and background processes that might activate during the scan including the screensaver.
  • Temporarily disable your anti-virus and real-time anti-spyware protection.
  • After starting the scan, do not use the computer until the scan has completed.
  • When finished, re-enable your anti-virus/anti-malware (or reboot) and then you can reconnect to the Internet.

Hi Myrti,

Thanks for replying so fast!

A couple of thoughts on the nature of the issue...
You said- "did you use the "immunize" function of spybot? It sounds as if this may be a problem between spybot and webroot."

I don't think this to be the case, because Spybot S&D Immunize function only affects IE (I did use it), and IE was not open when the alerts randomly started popping up. Also, because the friend that gave me the laptop told me about this behavior occuring before I installed Spybot S&D.

Also, and I apologize if this sounds pedantic, you stated "Note: If using the vendor's download site you will be asked to register with MySophos so an email containing an activation link can be sent to your email address."

This is almost correct. Actually, it wants all your info before it gives you the download link, no activation was required.

Now, on to the show -

Deleted temps and internet temp files.
Disabled realtime scans, closed all programs I could in the systray.

Installed and started the software as explained above, via double-click. It would not allow a checkmark for running processes, so uninstalled then reinstalled using right-click 'run as administrator'. Started program using 'run as administrator', same issue. Found the following -

Hi,

Spybot also modifies the hosts file, which will affect every program connecting to the internet. The immunize-function does not only focus on Internet Explorer.
The sites you have listed, are websites that used to be malicious sites back in 2006 or earlier, nowadays they aren't owned by anyone. This is one of the reasons I suspect the problem to be related to something else than malware.

How long have you had IObit? I'm not a big fan of Iobit because of this incident: link

Hi Myrti,

Thanks for the post - I was not aware of IObit's dishonorable methodology, it is now removed. I had put it on in the process of trying to get this issue under control.

I'm now getting webroot alarms again for spyware sites being contacted. When Internet Communication
shield is on, it alarms a lot. I currently still have avast and webroot with spysweeper and superantispy.

I'm wondering, could this be a case of false positives, and what would be the be best way to test this? Comodo Internet Security? Wireshark? Both? They both come in 64Bit Win7 compatible versions...

If Comodo catches it when I take the shield down, perhaps it would show the program initiating the request, and Wireshark could show the traffic.

Might this be the right track? Please let me know your thoughts on this...

Thanks again,

IBColder

Hi,

could you give me a log of open connections with Wireshark when you get the alerts next time. I'll say the chances are high that it is a false positive, however we need to make sure where it comes from, before we can be sure.

Hi Myrti,

Looks like these being false positives is wishful thinking...

A bit about the network -
192.168.1.1 is the 2Wire router/modem tied to the internet via DSL.
192.168.1.4 is the win7-64 laptop, connected through the 2Wire.
192.168.1.100 is a secondary router on the same class C, sharing the same 2Wire connection at the other end of the house.
There are several other desktops and laptops running on the LAN.

Shields up or down, wireshark reports the same activity, and there's just a small subset being reported and blocked by webroot.

I've uploaded the shields up file. This was taken while the computer was idle, with webroot shields running, browsers all closed...

Sending Wireshark native version and .txt version, respectively, zipped. Taken with wireshark 1.2.7 and Winpcap 4.1.1.

Where to next?

Thanks again,

IBColder

Hi,

very sorry, for the delay. Could you please run a scan with netstat, this time please use the following command:
  • click on Start
  • in the search window type cmd
  • select cmd.exe right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  • a black window will open.
  • please enter the following text into that window and hit enter:
    netstat -abn>%temp%\tmp.txt && %temp%\tmp.txt
  • a log file will open. Please save that log and post the content in your next reply.
If you do not have the run-command in your Start menu:
Please right click on your taskbar, select Properties, select the Start Menu tab, click on Customize and tick the Display Run checkbox and click OK.

This should show which executable is connecting to which IP and it may show us which file is accessing the websites in question.
If you don't feel at ease with cleaning the PC and would prefer to reformat I can only say that reformatting is always the safest solution. I think that we can find the source of this problem and would be interested in trouble shooting. However I don't want to keep you from reformatting, it may be the safest and quickest solution at this point.
regards myrti

I don't know what the *:* means, maybe any IP:any port?

As far as formatting, this article gives me pause -

Hi,

very sorry about the delay. What the article describes is theoretically possible but very very unlikely. For one, as the article says the rootkit would have to be specially crafted to your hardware. This means that the infection will only work on a small amounts of PC, which makes this typ of malware unattractive for the malware writer who wants to maximize his revenue by maximizing the amount of infected PCs. So unless you have enemies that can pay for hand crafted malware for your PC, I wouldn't worry about it.
In addition Windows7 (and Windows Vista) have highly increased the security regarding hardware access in regards to Windows XP. If I would have to bet on an OS where the BIOS may be flashed by an infection I would think XP not Windows Vista or 7. Furthermore 64bit operating systems are only using signed drivers, making it even more secure. To be honest we have yet to see the first "regular" rootkit on 64bit operating systems. They are well protected against these kind of threats and up until now we haven't seen any rootkit that was able to bypass the signed driver requirement.

Finally a BIOS infection, if there was one, would probably be flashable, as mentioned in the article. However I would not advice to flash the BIOS without good reason.

The netstat results only show legit results and the wireshark log showed that the websites mentioned are trying to be resolved, but don't get an IP (since these websites no longer exists in most cases). So whatever is trying to connect, it doesn't get anywhere, it's sending data into nirvana.

Before we continue searching for the source I would suggest, that you uninstall spybot and IObit, so that they can't interfere with the search. Let me know if removing them changes anything.

Hi Myrti,

Thanks for getting back to me!

I had already uninstalled IOBit (Apr 15 2010 post) as you recommended.
I just now uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy, powered down, powered back on, and it's calling out to sites again.

-I still have a hosts file with many entries, should I replace it with a blank one and flush DNS cache?
-Remaining active Antivirus apps: Webroot (with SpySweeper) and Avast.
-Remaining active Antispy/Antimalware apps: Superantispyware, SpySweeper.
-Malwarebytes is installed, but not active (launch to scan only).

Please let me know the next step...

Thanks again,

IBColder

Hi,

SASW and Avast shouldn't be causing the problem and Malwarebytes is indeed not running at all.
Yes, please empty the hosts file and let me know if that helps. Before emptying it could you please copy the first 20 lines of the hosts file here, so that I can see the head (eg from the first line until O1 - Hosts: 127.0.0.1 1000gratisproben.com)
