hi there,

i am pretty sure this is related to my email account (msn) as every time i open account, kapersky catches a trojan. i saved the locations (copied link and then deleted from quarantine) and have noted one of them, for reference. ( C:\Documents and Settings\debra\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\UKUROVMF ). all locations are all the same, except the last batch of numbers changes for each trojan.
i should mention that after the GMER scan was completed my machine froze and i had to do a forced shutdown. help!!!! : )

i've noted below the report from kapersky with all errors below (which, now that i see this, it seems that more than just mail is infected:

Hello conky smile.gif Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I will be assisting you in cleaning up your system.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

Please keep in mind that we have a large backlog of users just like yourself waiting to be helped so try to be as timely as possible in your replies. Since we do this on a part-time voluntary basis we are limited on how many logs we can respond to and keep open due to time restraints. If you have to be away or can't answer for some other reason just let me know. Thank you for your understanding.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Just to clarify things, are you receiving help at any other forum at this time? The reason of course is so there is not conflict between helpers having you do different things.

The other thing is are you experiencing any popups or redirection to sites other than the ones you are trying to get to?

Thanks,

thewall

hi wall, smile.gif

thanks so much for the help. it is MUCH appreciated.

i have not posted my info anywhere else, so my computer (i.e. life) is solely in your hands.
i'm not experiencing any popups or redirection to sites other than the ones i am trying to get to.

update: today i havent had any 'virus/trojan' warnings...yesterday i did. whenever i clicked on 'quarantine' (in kapersky), it said "Trojan-Spy.html.fraud.gen - cannot be moved to quarantine: object not found." otherwise everything is same as when i posted. finally, i have both sent and received a bunch of emails as well as documents (safe...from my sister). do u advise that i re-do all i have previously done, to make sure all is still as clean as it was when posted initially?

thanks so very much.
debbie

p.s. i'm in all nite so i can work closely with you on this. if phone is easier for you, i can also give you my # or we can IM. whatever works for you. smile.gif

Thanks, we should be able to do anything we need by posts. That way I also have a record of what I have done if I need to review it later or if I should need another helper's input which happens sometimes on really tough issues.

Let's give ComboFix a look at your system and see what it may find:

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Instruction can be found HERE
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

I should mention that right after doing all that is noted in the log, my machine froze and I had to manually shut down by pressing power button. not sure if this effects anything, but thought it worthwhile mentioning.

anyway, I downloaded ComboFix via link 1
I did all to spybot except when I came to the 2nd unchecking of teatimer, I didn’t see it so I couldn’t uncheck it. will that be ok?
I paused kapersky and downloaded combofix.
will now disable kapersky and note my combofix log.

I I don’t need to disable my firewall? actually my windows firewall I think is already disabled, but I have a wireless router...does that have a firewall that must be disabled?

p.s. your email came to my spam folder yesterday, and as such I was unaware that u had responded. I wanted to apologize for not being around when I said I would be.

Please give me a rundown on any issues you are having still. ComboFix didn't pick up a lot.

thanks so much wall,

as combofix only picked up few things, is there more that i must do to clean the nasties out completely?

i havent gotten any kapersky warnings today (surprisingly) although i did yesterday.
however, i just installed my new java (the one you recommended) and just afterwards my internet connection started crawling.
i have a good wireless connection, so that's not it.
i should note that i rebooted after installation.
could the problem be related?

in the time that i have been typing this (5 minutes), my connection is now speedy and fine.
any ideas why it was slow to begin with ?

finally, is the trojan/virus (are they the same) gone completely?
and what part of all this actually cleaned them off the machine?

sorry for the many questions.

p.s. you're probably real young (i mean that nicely), but i design childrens' tee shirts and would like to give you one as a small thank you.
if you're interested take a look at plutotees . com and let me know what you like. we go up to size 6 or 8, depending on style.

Thank you very much, it was a nice offer but I am a little too old for children's shirts. I will be 60 in a couple more weeks and have grown children as well as grandchildren. I don't really won't to be a kid again but I sure would like to feel like I did in the fifties and sixties. smile.gif

You say I suggested to download Java but I don't recall doing that and I don't see it in any of my posts. What version and kind of Java did you download?

As far as whether everything is gone let's run a Kaspersky on-line scan and see if it shows anything:

It's important to run this online scan to search for any remnants. It can take some time, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Please perform a scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner.
-- Requires free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed before scanning for malware as ActiveX is no longer being used.
-- This scan will not remove any detected file threats but it will show where they are located so they can be cleaned with other tools.
  • Vista users need to right-click the IE or FF Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar icons and Run As Administrator from the context menu.
  • Read the "Advantages - Requirements and Limitations" then press the ... button.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click the Run button. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • When the downloads have finished, you should see 'Database is updated. Ready to scan'. Click on the ... button.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked. By default, they should be. If not, please check them and click on the ... button afterwards:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under the Scan section. OK any warnings from your protection programs.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and do NOT use the computer while the scan is running. Keep all other programs and windows closed.
  • Once the scan is complete (the 'status' will show complete), click on View Scan Report and any infected objects will be shown.
  • Click on Save Report As... and change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Name the file KAVScan_ddmmyy (day, month, year) before clicking on the Save button and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste (Ctrl+C) the saved scan results from that file in your next reply.
-- Note: Some online scanners will detect existing anti-virus software and refuse to cooperate. You may have to disable the real-time protection components of your existing anti-virus and try running the scan again. If you do this, remember to turn them back on after you are finished.

the java installation (jre-6u19-windows-i586.exe) was part of the READ & RUN ME FIRST. MALWARE REMOVAL GUIDE.

Step 3: House Cleaning
• Specifically look in Add/Remove Programs for the below programs and uninstall them if found:
o MyWay or MyWay Search Assistant
o Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
o Viewpoint Media Player
o Viewpoint Toolbar
o Viewpoint Toolbar (Remove Only)
• Skip this Sun Java update procedure if using Windows 98 or ME. Uninstall ALL old Sun Java versions because they have vulnerabilities and then get updated.
o See: Updating Sun Java
will run the scan now & get back to you.

and again, thanks. you're my hero!

i'm confused! am i just running a REGULAR FULL SCAN with kapersky?
the instructions you noted (see *, below) are ONLY FOR VISTA so i should ignore them?? (i have xp)

* •Vista users need to right-click the IE or FF Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar icons and Run As Administrator from the context menu.
all the way thru...
•Make sure these boxes are checked. By default, they should be. If not, please check them and click on the ... button afterwards:

finally, i guess the JRE install i did earlier IS, in fact, what you note as required, below?

-- Requires free Java Runtime Environment (JRE) to be installed before scanning for malware as ActiveX is no longer being used.
-- This scan will not remove any detected file threats but it will show where they are located so they can be cleaned with other tools.•Vista users need to right-click the IE or FF Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar icons and Run As Administrator from the context menu.

sorry about the many posts. i imagine you're in dreamland right now. : )

anyway, i did my full kapersky scan of my hard drive & my 2 thumbdrives and nothing came up (yay).
is all now fixed? what about what u found in combofix. should i fix?

in tying all loose ends up, should i now change my settings back as they originally were (hopefully i will remember). for instance...
- MSconfig to be reset to selective startup?
- hiding hidden files, system files and file extensions
- resetting spybot tea-timer
- can i delete all those things i downloaded (ark, attach, dds, defogger, gmer, combofix, & the logs)?
anything else that must be reset?

do u think anyone was able to get any confidential info from my computer with the virus/trojan that was on my machine?

also, i am now using kapersky (only because i read that kapersky picks up trojans/viruses that avg or avast does not).
what would be the point of avg or avast if they dont pick up viruses/trojans?
do you think it it will be ok to go back to avg or avast for antivirus, or is it worth paying for kapersky?

finally, and this is regarding something entirely different...
i cannot get into 1 site (wierdly, only 1). fatwallet.com. what could be blocking it? i've even noted it in 'trusted sites', but simply cannot log in.

thank you again, my computer genius hero!

You're welcome for the help, I enjoy doing it.

Let's see if I can answer everything.

Not sure who had you use msconfig but it is usually a diagnostic tool and not meant to permanently disable programs. I would suggest setting it back to it's default and undoing all the things you used it to disable. If you want to stop certain programs from starting up then you could use something like autoruns. We have a complete forum which addresses this HERE.

Yes you should go back in and rehide those hidden files and folders.

You can now also reneable any programs such as Spybot which you have disabled.

Let me know if this answers what you wanted to know then in the last post I will deal with the tools we used and what to do with them.

so...i changed all settings back as they originally were

- resetting spybot tea-timer

is all now fixed? what about what u found in combofix. should i fix?

in regards to all those things i downloaded (ark, attach, dds, defogger, gmer, combofix, & the logs), when i did a crap cleaner, i accidentally deleted them. is that a problem?
