Thank you for any help. Iíve come to this website because it looks like people know what they are talking about.

Iím using Vista and Iím on a Gateway T-series laptop.

Iíve tried to do a few things like uninstall Mcafee and successfully I think. There might be some stuff left over but the firewall message isnít showing up anymore in the security center. Iíve also tried to uninstall suspicious software in the add/remove programs list.

Iím using Avast as my antivirus program now. No others are installed. Iíve Defragged with smart defrag and used ccleaner to try and clean things up hopefully. I ran the sfc scan and it said some things couldnít be automatically fixed. Iíve ran the chkdsk and fine tuned in some areas.

Iíve been getting errors all around and here are a few.

I canít update windows. I am in the admin account. It states that the security center service is disabled even when its not. I try to restart the service but it wonít work. The service is already started anyway. Some services Iíve tried to start and set to auto and they will revert to its original setting upon reboot.

Internal error: Failed to expand shell folder constant ďuserappdataĒ
This error wonít let me install lots of software like spybot and malwarebytes

Every time I get to the desktop on load I get a, ďYou do not have permission to change Catalyst Control settings Please contact your administrator for further help.Ē

I canít even install any Microsoft hotfixís.

I also get this error that prevents me from installing or running certain things, including the one care scanner. Error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\Adobe\Acrobat\PREFER~1\.

The security center pops up at load and states that I have no malware protection when avast is installed. Also, I can scan with windows defender but it says it's off.

All of this seems like settings that are messed up or changed. I canít even load from cd because it says Iím not administrator in the bios. I would rather not open the laptop to try and reset cmos because I just donít want to take the risk of some crazy setting Gateway put in there or something.

Iíve ran dds, gmer, and hijackthis with all the logs. Avast was disabled. Also, the cd emulation was disabled.

Thanks again for any help, it is appreciated

Hi,

LimeWire

Above listed ones are P2P file sharing programs. P2P downloads are nowadays one of those things that most likely bring infection into the system. My recommendation is to uninstall these (and other if present) P2P file sharing programs.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers.
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully first.

Please continue as follows:
  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review (paste log contents into your reply), and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
