Hi,

I've been working on a computer for a few days now and I just can't seem to get rid of CoolWWWSeach.Leftovers. I've run Spybot several times (In normal mode and safe mode) and it keeps removing it and purging it but everytime I check it's back again.

I've gone through msconfig and I can't find what would be setting it of.

I've never worked with HijackThis before so I thought I had better get some advice before I just storm into it.

This is the hijack.log as of about 30 minutes ago...

Hi,

I became impatient so started fiddling around (very short attention span  ).

So far I have now run SpSeHjfix, CWShredder and CleanUp. I have also removed some items from the HijackThis log after carefully reading a tutorial on how to use the program (whether this was a good idea or not I've yet to find out). It seems I've chased away the last of CoolWWWSearch.Leftovers as it is no longer appearing in in Spybot - but I have yet to check it in Safe Mode.

I have now found that there is a virus lodged in my restore file (Startpage.19.J) and I'm about 3 seconds away from sitting down on the ground and clucking like a chicken!

Here is the current HijackThis log:

I know this will probably push me to the back of the que...but I thought I shoudl up date everyone with the latest information.

Also...does anyone know if I virus could wipe out everything in the programs menu. Programs are still intact but the shortcuts are missing?

Thanks
Manda

Hello Completely_Predictable and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. There are just a couple of additional items to take care of.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O16 - DPF: {10003000-1000-0000-1000-000000000000} - ms-its:mhtml:file://C:\foo.mht!http://dl.ad-ware.cc/2qss3JuSyF4nBsflRMH5.chm::/on.exe

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Alright, reboot and you are good to go.

I have never heard of any infections taking out the program shortcuts but that doesn't mean that there isn't something like that out there. If just the shortcuts are missing but the programs are still on the drive and functional then you could manually replace them if you wanted to. The only other option would be to reinstall the programs again to get the shortcuts back.

Cheers.
