http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/307667/stubborn-infection-not-identified/

Long story in the thread-link above. The quick summary is that I picked up Total Vista Security/ave.exe on 4-1, cured it using the Fix.Reg solution I found online, and then picked up Antimalware Doctor on 4-6, thought I cured that too, and have been running into problems ever since - a browser redirect and a rapidly and aggressively shrinking hard drive.

I commonly use MalwareBytes, McAfee AntiVirus Plus, and the general Windows settings. I was instructed by McAfee support today to run their "FreeScan" software, which was running for near six hours before my harddrive reported that it was filling up and I killed the search. I ran Spybot SD after that, and removed a few lingering issues/cookies.

I'm posting my DDS Log below and attaching the secondary file.

I was also directed to run a GMER, but midway through that process I was given a "blue screen of death": "Windows is shutting down to prevent a catastrophic loss" - or that's what I think it said. It gave me a blue screen, white text, told me it had stopped to prevent damage to the computer, and then counted down to reboot and dump. I rebooted to safe mode and based on that memory warning I checked and immediately noticed that my 16GB increased to 84GB. I rebooted to normal mode and I am now at 81MB open hard drive space. Confused.

When I rebooted into Windows (not in safe mode) was greeted with an error message as well: "Error loading c:users\machine\appdata\local\temp\mstczvlg.dll".

Just prior to GMER crashing, I noticed that under the Users-Me-AppData-Local-Microsoft-Windows folder the GMER search/process was picking up a "Virtualized" folder that I could not see myself, but which looked to have a full copy of my hard drive copied into that "Virtualized" folder (judging on the filenames scrolling through).

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
regards,
schrauber

Good morning Schrauber, I'm glad to hear from you.

I'm not sure if you've had a chance to review the summaries I included in my original posts. I'll recap quickly and explain further if you have questions. On 4-1, I picked up Total Vista Security (ave.exe). I cleaned that using a solution I found online - namely creating and running a "fix.reg" file and then throwing Malwarebytes at it. On 4-6, I was "attacked" by a bunch of processes trying to dial out of my computer (I think), and there were so many popping up and being blocked by my security (basic Windows and McAfee AV+) that I had kill power to my tower. When I brought it back up, I was infected by Antimalware Doctor and I appeared to have a browser hijack working as well - if I did a Google search, I'd often get redirected when I clicked one of the search results (if I opened the cached version, I'd be fine), and periodically I'd get a pop-up or pop-under disguised as a website. I entered no data in any of these sites.

Since I had McAfee's software, I pestered their customer service to help me. They told me to download Freescan and that it would fix my problems. Or, for another $80, I could talk to one of their specialists. Since I was already paying them for security, I was a little reluctant to throw more money at "a losing horse". I did run Freescan, starting at about 1:00PM, and left it run for most of the day. At about 8:00PM, I noticed a warning come up on my screen that announced my 700GB harddrive was nearly full - there was about 50MB left. I don't know how much open space I had prior to that, but it'd be close to half-way full, so closer to ~300GB or so. I panicked, killed the McAfee Freescan process, and rebooted. I posted my issues to Bleeping Computer.

Boopme asked me for a DDS report, which I ran successfully, and then a GMER report, which crashed my system to a blue screen: "Windows is shutting down to prevent damage to your system", etc, and a countdown to a memory dump. When I rebooted, I had about 20GB back.

I didn't know I shouldn't make changes to my system until Orange Blossom clued me in a few days later, so while waiting for a response I ran Malwarebytes, Spybot SD, and McAfee Virus Scan+ several times. Most of the time, I got clear scans back, though Spybot found some issues Malware didn't, and McAfee found a few entries under a deep scan. Worried about space, I also removed several programs (mostly games from Steam) and deleted a few files - mostly personal stuff. I cleared out about 100GB. As of this morning, I am at 117GB of 688GB.

When I noticed my harddrive filling up, I went searching for where the problem was - I did it low-tech, going into Windows Explorer and looking for new dates (4-6, etc) and large files. I figured out that my Appdata\..\Windows folder had ballooned. When I ran a full Malwarebytes scan, it turned up a few entries deep in my harddrive, under a "Virtualized" folder: C:\Users\Machine\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Virtualized\C\...etc. I used Malwarebyte's ability to jump to a file location to drill down to that folder, and then backed around a bit. That C folder under Virtualized is 199GB. It looks like a copy of my harddrive. I made a shortcut so I could get back to it if I needed too (Temporary Internet Files was hidden from me entirely), and then went hands off.

Right now, I have four issues in mind:

Where did this virtualized folder come from and can I delete it safely?

When I boot up, I get an error when I log into Windows: "Error loading C:users\machine\appdata\local\temp\mstczvlg.dll".

Am I "clean" - is Total Vista Security gone, Antimalware Doctor, the redirects, etc?

Why, if I am the only account on the system (thus being the administrator), am I not allowed to fully immunize myself when I use that feature in Spybot SD? And there are a few other minor bits where I've hit a wall saying that I can't do that unless I'm the administrator.

Overall, right now my system seems to be running more or less smoothly - with the exception of having this filled-up harddrive and my own paranoia. I am attaching a new DDS file, but I would like to hold off on running the GMER file because of the blue-screen it gave me last time. Can you tell me why that happened?

Hello, Nove
Welcome to the Bleeping Computer Forums. My name is Thomas (Tom is fine), and I will be helping you fixing your problems.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will have to close your topic.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic. The topics you are tracking can be found here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.
  • Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.

Please go here and have a look how you can disable your security software.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on the renamed Combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Even with the link provided, I am struggling to turn off McAfee Antivirus Plus. I have downloaded Combofix but I have not run it.

Can you tell me how to disable or turn off McAfee AV+?

Can you rightclick the mcafee symbol in the taskbar and choose "disable"?

Also please have a look here

It didn't give me that option.
I dug around and around, and finally found a setting to turn off active scanning and the firewall.

Not too long ago, McAfee redid their interface. It is not userfriendly, in my opinion.

Hi,

Please don't attach the logfiles, just post it here in the thread.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
Folder::
c:\programdata\mubuyewa
c:\programdata\kotibavu
c:\programdata\dudepiti
c:\programdata\zunehupo
c:\programdata\woforole
c:\programdata\Update
c:\programdata\minupije
c:\programdata\kajeyute
c:\programdata\vojuluwi
File::
c:\users\Machine\AppData\Local\1360466830.dll

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Please update your version of Malwarebytes and run a quick scan, post back with the content of the logfile.

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  • Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.

  • Push the Start button.
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, push
  • Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.

Tom,

I've posted your requested logs (Combofix, Malware, ESET, OTL) in individual posts above this one. Thanks a lot for the instructions - they were great.

ESET found 8 problems. They were quarantined, but not deleted. None of the other programs turned up any errors that were obvious to my untrained eye.

Other than using Firefox to check email and make this post, I have not done anything else since finishing with the OTL scan.

Is ESET something I can use on my own in the future? I see that Bleeping Computer asks people not to use some tools without instructions. Is ESET one of them? It seemed very effective.

My "virtualized" folder is still there and still has what looks like a copy of my harddrive folder/contents in it. Can this be deleted safely or should I leave it alone for now? Also, my Harddrive did lose more space - I've picked up some 7GB over the last day and while scanning. I don't know if the scans caused it or if it is some sort of temporary cache. Any ideas? A few days ago, I was at 120GB free. Sunday night, 113GB free. Monday morning, 112GB free.

I turned off McAfee Antivirus Plus to run combofix - can I turn that back on?

My computer experienced another blue screen shut-down Monday morning:

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: d4
BCP1: 82A012A4
BCP2: 000000FF
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 80C9F666
OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1

Files that help describe the problem:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini041210-01.dmp
C:\Users\Machine\AppData\Local\temp\WER-29125-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\Machine\AppData\Local\temp\WER8EC7.tmp.version.txt

Read our privacy statement:

This happened when I clicked a link in Google that took me to a page that loaded iTunes. Nothing other than Firefox was running - that I was aware of.

I allowed my computer to reboot normally. Everything seems fine (harddrive still at 112GB free, though - doesn't seem like any memory cache got cleared by the boot cycle), McAfee is back on, and the Error I was getting ("Error loading c:users\machine\appdata\local\temp\mstczvlg.dll") is gone.

--edit
As of Monday evening, I'm at 110GB free - picked up some 2GB today, somehow.

Hi,

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Bittorrent). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. NOT supported for use in 9x or ME

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 19.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u19-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    CODE
    :OTL
    [2010/04/06 08:34:48 | 000,008,846 | -HS- | M] () -- C:\Users\Machine\AppData\Local\GbW53PfLB
    [2010/04/06 08:34:48 | 000,008,846 | -HS- | M] () -- C:\ProgramData\GbW53PfLB
    [2010/04/06 08:30:15 | 000,006,456 | -H-- | M] () -- C:\ProgramData\jedehemo
    [2010/04/02 11:47:34 | 000,000,348 | ---- | M] () -- C:\Users\Machine\Desktop\fix.reg
    [2010/04/01 23:32:11 | 000,001,126 | -HS- | M] () -- C:\Users\Machine\AppData\Local\8Cq4r
    [2010/04/01 23:32:11 | 000,001,126 | -HS- | M] () -- C:\ProgramData\8Cq4r
    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [emptyflash]
    [resethosts]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, when done it will say "Fix Complete press ok to open the log"
  • Please post that log in your next reply. Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
================================Follow up scan=================================
  • Double click on OTL to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
    • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window. OTL.Txt a This is saved in the same location as OTL.
    • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file and post it with your next reply.

When this did not help We will switch the way smile.gif

I've removed two "older" Java programs (update four and six, I believe) and Bittorrent. I rebooted and installed jre-6u19-windows-i586. I will be running OTL in a moment and posting the logs - there will be two, I take it? One for the fix and one for the follow-up?
