Is there a way to get photos stored on an external HDD which was attached to a Mac laptop onto my windows XP machine? The Mac is dead and buried and I want to recover whatever I can from the external drive. My PC is not recognising the HDD at all. I don't know anyone with a Mac who will let me transfer the files onto a thumbdrive or disk so I need help.
Any ideas welcome. Thanks

Intel mac or ppc?

The HFS file system changed around 10.3 I think.

There are third party utilities available but most are not free. I use ubuntu live cd which automounts mac disks from my hackintosh, but may not automount OS9 and before or osx for ppc without some installs. It doesn't hurt to try it since the live cd will not write to your hard drive unless you specifically tell it to.

link with some variations:

third party:
and the only free one I have found:

I have not tried the free one or the other third party apps.
