When I use the computer, there is always a bombardment of ads but recently AVG said that the HOSTS file was corrupted and system files were corrupted. When I try to run programs like rkill to stop the processes, it would say I do not have the privileges to run the file.

Hi,

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    1. DDS.txt
    2. Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

  • ---

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:
    • Double-click .exe that you downloaded
    • Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
    • Don't check
      Show All
      box while scanning in progress!
    • When scanning is ready, click Copy.
    • This copies log to clipboard
    • Post log (if the log is long, archive it into a zip file and attach instead of posting) in your reply.

unfortunately, combofix pretty much destroyed the harddrive, and i couldn't recover anything.

    It's a brick now

    Hi,

More likely Virut and its cleaning are involved. Do you get any error message during boot? When you ran ComboFix did it install recovery console?

no it would not even go to the recovery console, it would just boot to the screen where it says "safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc" and it'll count down to 30. Then restart and go back.

I ran ubuntu from a disk and recovered my documents, and then installed ubuntu over it. So the problem is solved in a way, but not quite the way i want it. It's unfortunate that it bricked but there's always the chance when you use combofix

If it didn't show recovery console option before the menu with normal mode etc options then recovery console wasn't installed.

It's difficult to say for sure if it was ComboFix caused issue or not. Virut is nasty infection and I still believe it may still have remained partly active after dr Web run.

no the recovery console was installed because before this the computer would boot and then let me choose between XP or recovery console, but this time it just died. Well it's working fine now with ubuntu so nothing to worry about.

If recovery console option was present earlier then it should had been present after ComboFix run too. There was something else involved but it's hard to say for sure what since the issue doesn't exist anymore. Glad you were able to save your documents anyway.

    I'll close this topic now.
