"Internet Security" popups have taken over my computers (2 of them). It won't allow me to run GMER or Malwarebytes, and won't let me download DDS. Luckily, I ran a log yesterday, at the outset of the problem, and it is posted below.
Briefly -- since my computer seized up last time, when I wrote a long, elaborate post -- on this infected computer I am running WinXP Pro SP3 on a Lenovo T60, with AVG free as my antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall.

Help! Thanks.

Hello purefog,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

    Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
Download and Run RKill
    Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

2.
Install Recovery Console and Run ComboFix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running.
ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Note: Please Do NOT mouseclick combofix's window while its running because it may cause it to stall.

3.
Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.

* When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:

1. DDS.txt
2. Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop post the contents of the DDS.txt log. Save the other report incase I need to look at it later.

Things to include in your next reply:
Rkill log
Combofix.txt
DDS.txt
Attach.txt
How is your machine running now?

Sorry we didn't get very far. I cannot download rkill. I disabled McAfee Virus Scan per the instructions, but I still cannot download it. I get the option to save or cancel anyone of the four choices, but when I click "Save," nothing happens (except, often, I get a bogus security warning of the type I am tryig to get rid of).

I'm sorry, but I must change the rules of the game on you. I have TWO infected computers. The one we are working on is my iMac running Win XP Pro SP3. (I may have a fix going on my IBM, which responds differently, but which is nonetheless Smart Secuity-infected.) I was able to move the rkill.exe file over to this computer from the IBM, where I had successfully downloaded it, and I have now run it. McAfee Virus Scan is now back on. I cannot download DDS to give you a DDS scan on this computer, I am afraid. You want me to just march through the above steps and perform the ones I can, regardless of order, or does the different computer change your instructions? And is there a way to get DDS? Whatever -- please let me now.

Hello,

Lets work on one computer at a time. Please go ahead and run Combofix if you can and make sure to disable your Mcafee before running it. If you can't get Combofix to run in regular mode try it in Safemode. Regular mode is preferred.

This is how to boot into Safemode:

Now reboot into Safe Mode.
This can be done tapping the F8 key as soon as you start your computer
You will be brought to a menu where you can choose to boot into safe mode.
Make sure you choose the option without networking support.
Please see here for additional details.

What ever you do don't transfer any thing from computer to computer after you run Combofix.

Purefog here again. What had been recommended for my IBM Stinkpad was a fix that enabled Malwarebytes to run. It cleaned out a whole bunch of stuff, including a bunch of vundo's. After running Malwarebytes, I then rebooted and re-ran it in a quick scan out of an abundance of caution, and there was already a vundo there, which I cleaned out.) However, now that I have done all that, I still can't simply download and install Malwarebytes. (I click on the shortcut installed as part of the setup, and it looks helplessly for the file mbam.exe, but cannot find it.) When I was running malwarebytes, which I did through a sort of backdoor approach, it wouldn't let me update it, instead giving me the message "MBAM_ERROR_UPDATING (0, 0, SHRegGetPath)". (I sent that into Malwarebytes' support Team, as they requested.)

So, in other words, while my IBM computer is not presently showing the garish signs of Smart Security infection, there is still some infection going on. And my iMac awaits your response. Let's call them Computer A, for the Thinkpad laptop, and Computer B, for the iMac.

I look forward to your expertise! (I have just run DDS again; here is the text of the dds log.)

Reply to Post #5: I'm sorry, but AVG Free is VERY new to me, and I do not see how to turn off the antivirus program. (I no longer run mcAfee on the IBM, which is the computer we are going to deal with first.) Do you know how to disable the antivirus program? It was game to run combofix even with AVG on, but would do so only at "my own risk," which is a term I hate.

Hello,

QUOTE
Purefog here again. What had been recommended for my IBM Stinkpad was a fix that enabled Malwarebytes to run. It cleaned out a whole bunch of stuff, including a bunch of vundo's. After running Malwarebytes, I then rebooted and re-ran it in a quick scan out of an abundance of caution, and there was already a vundo there, which I cleaned out.) However, now that I have done all that, I still can't simply download and install Purefog here again. What had been recommended for my IBM Stinkpad was a fix that enabled Malwarebytes to run.

Let's call them Computer A, for the Thinkpad laptop, and Computer B, for the iMac..

I don't understand why you are running tools and doing things that I have not suggested. In my previous post I asked you specific questions and to run certain tools. I didn't say run Malwarebytes. If you wan't to run your own tools your own way then You no longer will require my help. If you want my help please follow my directions in my previous post. If from this point on you run any tools or do any changing of your machine other than what I suggest until I give you the all clean I will consider you no longer require our help here at BC.

I am sorry if I engendered confusion by switching from machine to machine, compounded when our communications crossed. I am now working on the IBM only, in response to your command to deal with one machine at a time.

The instructions said nothing about saving the rkill log, so I did not do so. That's why it is not attached here.

Below, in order, are the combofix log, and the DDS logs. (As to the attach log, the instructions say "save it in case I need to see it later" and then, a few lines later, "post it." So here ya go.

And, in answer to your question, it seems to be running fine. For example, I was able, for the first time in a couple of days, to do a straight download, install, and update of Malwarebytes. (I did not, however, run the program.) This suggests that whatever was blocking those acts has been disabled. I will, however, defer to your review of the various logs if you think there is more that ought to be done. If not, let's switch computers, mmmkay?

You indicated that you wanted to work on one computer at a time. If the log shows your work is done here on the first computer we tackled, could we move on to the next, if that is convenient? Thanks.

Returning to the computer we were working on last night, this morning I thought it was running okay. However, suddenly, AVG popped up a Resident Shield alert that it had detected a Vundo virus -- I'm not sure where, in retrospect. I checked "remove threat as power user" (whatever that means) and Moved it to the vault (whatever that means). I thought I'd run a Malwarebytes quick scan and see what happened. Well, the MBAM scan gave me a clean bill of health, but in the course of it up popped up another Resident Shield alert, identifying Trojan Horse Generic17.ARQJ, detected on open. When I this time went to "Details," it said that it was in C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' AntiMalware\mbam.exe. So now, I don't know if I have a problem or not. (I performed the same acts to this trojan horse, i.e., remove threat as power user/move to vault). Any guidance you would like to lend would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

Please keep your Antivirus disabled. Also please don't use this machine for internet other than applying here.
Your machine is not yet clean. We have made outstanding progress though. thumbup2.gif The reason for disabling your Antivirus is that it will pick up files that have been quaratined by Combofix And MalwareBytes. Those in quarantine are no longer a threat but you avg will think they are.Please copy and paste all logs directly into your reply. Unless we specifically tell you to attach it.Please don't run MalwareBytes unless specifically told to.

1.
We need to run a CFScript.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

CODE
AWF::
c:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.bak

File::
c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDBB.tmp
c:\windows\Internet Logs\xDBF.tmp

Folder::
c:\program files\viewpoint

Driver::
Viewpoint Manager Service

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusOverride"=-
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"FirewallOverride"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"EnableFirewall"=-
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"DisableNotifications"=-

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

2.
Please uninstall your copy of Malwarebytes through Add/Remove Programs.

Uninstalling A Program Through "add/remove"

Click "start" on the taskbar and then click on the "Control Panel" icon.
Please doubleclick the "Add or Remove Programs" icon
A list of programs installed will be "populated" this may take a bit of time.
If they exist, uninstall the following by clicking on the following entries and selecting "remove":

Additional instructions can be found here if needed.

3.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

The ESET computer scan has been stopped at 37% for about 20-25 minutes.
