Hi, I seem to have been infected by this security2k.net malware. Every time I open IE it is forwarded to www.security2k.net. When I try to go to windows update, same thing happens.

I also receive System Alerts as baloon popups telling me that I have viruses, worms and need to install SpyTrooper or PSGuard. I have run SpyBot, AdAware, Trend Micro HouseCall and a number of other online scans, including Panda. In this very moment I'm also running TrojanHunter.

Here is my current log:

The scenario I am having is that every now and then a Security Alert is poped up in the system tray as a baloon telling me that I have got virus, worms and spyware / adware in my system that needs to be removed. I am then directed to either SpyTrooper or PSGuard via IE.

Also, every time I start IE it is directed to this www.security2k.net site no matter what homepage i specify. It also redirects to www.security2k.net if i specify certain addresses like windows update or pandas online scan. I have come through this by stopping the redirection (Stop button in browser) and by slightly changing the URL and pressing enter.

I just finnished running TrojanHunter with the following result:

Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
Found trojan file: C:\smitRem\LTDFix.exe (InfoFtp.100)

6 trojan files found

And I cleaned them all away. Next I ran the HijackThis again that logged the following:

Welcome to the forum.

Before starting any cleaning steps, please disable the Microsoft Anti-Spyware real-time protection:
  • Right-click on the Microsoft Anti-Spyware tray icon by your clock (it's the one with the red and yellow bulls-eye).
  • Click on "Security Agents Status".
  • Click on "Disable real-time protection".
Next, open Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
  • Click on the Options menu, then Settings.
  • Select "Real Time Protection" from the left column.
  • Uncheck "Enable (MSAS) Security Agents" and "Enable real-time spyware threat protection".
  • Click the Save button.
Finally, Right-click on the MSAS tray icon, select "Shutdown Microsoft Antispyware", and click "Yes" in the dialog that comes up.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, download CleanUp 4.0, install it.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {893fad3a-931e-4e53-b515-b1426d63799b} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp6F49.tmp

Close all windows and click "fix checked"

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Run CleanUp. This program will clean out all your temporary internet files.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.
