Hello and thanks in advance to the admins and helpers for their help and to all those who spend time and energy helping others. You are greatly appreciated.

I have a computer which is clearly infected by WinblueSoft and is certain to have other infections. I used AVG to remove 14 virus infections; there are certain to be more infections but I can't scan for them without removing this one. (I know we'll remove them all, but this was my current stopping point).

I researched the WinBlueSoft infection and found a page on Bleeping Computer with instructions for removal; that page is at:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...ove-winbluesoft

I tried to perform this procedure but it didn't work; there appears to be a logic problem in the procedure itself. I may have overlooked something but I don't think so. Or perhaps this machine has some additional infection that prevents this solution from working. But the logic of the procedure doesn't seem to make sense.

Briefly, the WinBlueSoft infection prevents all programs from running "unless the program's filename is among the 53 filenames that it allows". The article then instructs one to download and run Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. Of course, Malwarebytes' AntiMalware is not on the list of 53 filenames, so although MBAM will install, neither the updater nor the program will run. Neither will ComboFix, SpyBot or other scanner/cleaners, either in 'Normal' mode or in 'Safe Mode'. I tried creating a new profile, in the hopes that this would work but it didn't, either in 'Normal' mode or in 'Safe Mode'. I've emailed the article's author to ask about this and I won't be surprised if I have overlooked some obvious thing that I just didn't see. I will post any correction here for those who come after.

Anyway, I went ahead and performed the procedure described in the Preparation Guide. Here are the DDS reports; DDS and GMER log files are attached.

Again, thanks to all for your help.

Hello Victim,
  • Welcome to Bleeping Computer.
  • My name is fireman4it and I will be helping you with your Malware problem.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean".
  • Finally, please reply using the button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply, unless they do not fit into the post.

1.
We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  1. Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  2. If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  3. Click and then on "Advanced Mode"
  4. You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press
  5. Click on
  6. Click on
  7. Uncheck this checkbox:
  8. Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

2.
Please delete your copy of Combofix from your desktop.

3.
Download and Run RKill
Please download RKill by Grinler from one of the 4 links below and save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3
    Link 4

  • Before we begin, you should disable your anti-malware softwares you have installed so they do not interfere RKill running as some anti-malware softwares detect RKill as malicious. Please refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double-click on Rkill on your desktop to run it. (If you are using Windows Vista, please right-click on it and select Run As Administrator)
  • A black screen will appear and then disappear. Please do not worry, that is normal. This means that the tool has been successfully executed.
  • If nothing happens or if the tool does not run, please let me know in your next reply

4.
Download and Rename Combofix

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it 1234.scr before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Close any open windows, including this one.
  • Double click on 1234.scr & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Note:The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you
should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

Things to include in your next reply:
Rkill log
Combofix.txt
How is your machine running now?

fireman4it,

Thanks for your help; I very much appreciate it.

Over the weekend, I got a message from Grinler (whom I had messaged as I mentioned in my OP); he suggested that I change the filename of MBAM's executable from 'mbam.exe' to 'iexplore.exe' and see if it would run. There had been many reports of MBAM curing the 'WinBlueSoft' infection and I thought it might get me into the system far enough to be able to run other utilities, so I tried this. MBAM DID run, then, and found 234 infections which it removed. When I tried to run other utilities, though, they did not work, even after changing their names to 'iexplore.exe'. I have not succeeded in running any other utilities.

I apologize for jumping the gun before I saw your post; I was just trying to get the job done. I recognize that you may want me to start over by posting new reports and I'll post them in a subsequent post to this thread.

I had a question, as well: the first step you outlined was disabling SpyBot's 'TeaTimer'. I cannot launch SpyBot (or any other utility), so I cannot disable TeaTimer from within the program. Is there a way to do it without running SpyBot? Terminating its process, perhaps?

As I said, I'll post current log files in another post in 1/2 an hour or so, once I've followed the steps in the Preparation Guide. Again, sorry I jumped the gun.

Hello,

Could you also post the MBAM log. It should be located under logs tab.

" Extinguishing Malware from the world"

The Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal forum is very busy. If I'm helping you and I've not posted back within 24 hrs., send a PM with your topic link. Thank you.

ALL OTHER HELP REQUESTS VIA THE PM SYSTEM WILL BE IGNORED. The Forums are there for a reason!
Thanks-

fireman4it,

Here are the log files. The DDS.txt file's contents are below; I've attached (as attachments):

1) DDs's 'attach.txt'
2) GMER's 'ark.txt'
3) the mbam log you asked for

Thanks again, Fireman4it; it is much appreciated! I've saved the files that were in your original instructions (RKill, ComboFix, etc) but will possess myself of patience until you give the word.

Have Great Evening!

Hello Valdaquende,

Thanks for the logs! thumbup2.gif

Let's try to get on the same page here. That way we don't bypass or mess something up. whistling.gif

Fireman4it,

I went ahead and ran both RKILL and ComboFix. I have not included the RKILL log; it only killed one process: RKILL.pif

The ComboFix log appears below; it's been awhile since I saw such an impressive list of infections. If you can spare a moment to teach me, let me ask this: It was saving ComboFix as '1234.scr' to the desktop that allowed it run, I'd guess. MBAM removed the WinBlueSoft infection but the other infections kept anything named 'ComboFix' (and probably any other known utility) from opening. Would that be correct?

Anyway, here is the ComboFix log with my sincerest thanks:

Hello,
QUOTE
went ahead and ran both RKILL and ComboFix.

Yes, your correct. Rkill is designed to kill certain malware processes temporarily so our tools can run. Also renaming them sometimes helps. Actually MBAM did not remove the entire WinBluesoft infection. There was a Rootkit that was hiding from MBAM this is the reason other programs wouldn't run.

The good new is your log looks pretty good. clapping.gif Lets do some more checking just to make sure. whistling.gif

1.
One or more of the identified infections is a Backdoor Trojan or Rootkit.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. "If you would like to continue, then follow the steps below, otherwise please let me know"

2.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.44) and save it to your desktop.MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

3.
I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You can refer to this short video by: neomage
**Note**
To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.

4.
New Adobe Reader Installation:
  • Go here and click on the Download button to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

5.
Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)".
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
  • If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Things to include in your next reply:

Eset log
A new DDS log
No need for Attach.txt this time
How is your machine running now? Any sign of Malware?

Fireman4it,

Don't worry; from the moment I suspect that a machine may be infected it is IMMEDIATELY disconnected from any network and is only connected for long enough to download updates for the utilities I'm using to remove the infections. When possible, I update utilities using update files downloaded to another machine and transferred by flash drive.

Even so, I regularly scan my systems for any signs of infection.

I uninstalled the version of MBAM I had installed on Saturday and downloaded, installed, updated and ran it afresh. It found 14 more infections which it removed and rebooted. I'm scanning with the ESET online scanner and will complete the steps you've specified and post the MBAM, ESET and other logs.

In the meantime, I'm wondering; why the 'Quick Scan' option, rather than the 'Full Scan'? When running MBAM on infected machines, I've been choosing 'Full Scan' on the theory that it may detect items that the 'Quick Scan' might not find. I'd be interested in knowing whether I've been wrong.

Again, I'll post the log files, etc., as soon as they are completed.

Thanks so much!

Fireman4it,

I've completed the actions and scans you prescribed. I now see no signs of malware infection. Since MBAM still found and removed 14 items, I'm going to run it again; even though almost all of the items it found were in the QooBox folder, I think it's worth making sure.

Aside from that, the system looks pretty clean, as far as I can tell, though your more expert eye may see things that are not apparent to me.

If there are any additional steps I should take, I stand ready to take them. I'm still limiting network access until you give the all-clear.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello,
QUOTE
In the meantime, I'm wondering; why the 'Quick Scan' option, rather than the 'Full Scan'? When running MBAM on infected machines, I've been choosing 'Full Scan' on the theory that it may detect items that the 'Quick Scan' might not find. I'd be interested in knowing whether I've been wrong.

No, Your not wrong. MBAM will usually find 99% of the infected files with a Quickscan. We use this feature as it is less time consuming and will usually tell us what kind or kinds of infections we are dealing with. I usually always ask the user for a Full Scan before setting them all clean. We like to see all 0's.

It is very smart not to use the machine on the internet before all clean as malware will sometimes and in your case had a rootkit that could have kept downloading malware to your machine.

So in regards to the above Lets go ahead and update and run a Full Scan of MBAM. Lets also have another DDS log.

Things to include in your next reply:

Fireman4it,

I performed a full scan with MBAM, this morning. It found one infected item; a file stored in the Restore Points. I went ahead and deleted all System Restore points and am re-running the scan. Once we're done, I'll set a restore point from the cleaned system.

I'm performing another full MBAM scan now and will post the MBAM log and the DDS log when that process is completed.

The system seems to be running normally ... which is an unfamiliar feeling and a great relief.

Thanks!

Fireman4it,

The final scans look perfect; not one problem (that I can see) was found. I went ahead and set a new Restore Point and re-enabled AVG's resident shield, email scanner and updater. I am now installing SpyBot and setting it (and AVG) up to auto-update and auto-scan to keep the system as clean as possible.

I did note that there is an orphaned BHO entry that I should use HJT to delete:

BHO: {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - No File

I think this system is finally out of the woods. I am very grateful for your help and, just so you know, I will be making a donation to the Bleeping Computer volunteers this afternoon.

Here are the final MBAM and DDS logs:

Fireman4it,

I just finished running SpyBot; it found and removed 79 spyware objects. I've set it to update and run twice a week. Just thought you'd be interested in knowing.

I'm now installing Ad Aware and will give it a once-over with that as well.

Thanks,

Valdaquende

Hello,

The things Spybot is finding is probably file that have already been quarantined by other programs.

Here is a little about Spybot and Adaware I think you should be aware of.

Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware are no longer recommended
  • mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D or Ad-Aware due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products)
  • Further, most people don't understand Spybot's TeaTimer or how to use it and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools.
  • More effective alternatives are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware Free.

Hello, <Valdaquende>.
Congratulations! You now appear clean! specool.gif

Uninstall Combofix
  • Make sure that Combofix.exe that you downloaded is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
o *If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
  • Click on then Run....
  • Now copy & paste the green bolded text in the run-box and click OK.

    ComboFix /Uninstall

<Notice the space between the "x" and "/".> <--- It needs to be there
Windows Vista users: Press the Windows Key + R to bring the Run... Command and then from there you can add in the Combofix /Uninstall

  • Please advise if this step is missed for any reason as it performs some important actions:
"This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.
It also makes a clean Restore Point and flashes all the old restore points in order to prevent possible reinfection from an old one through system restore".

Are things running okay? Do you have any more questions?

System Still Slow?
You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.
If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

We Need to Clean Up Our Mess
  • Download OTC by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click icon to start the program. If you are using Vista, please right-click and choose run as administrator
  • Then Click the big button.
  • You will get a prompt saying "Being Cleanup Process". Please select Yes.
  • Restart your computer when prompted.

There is no need to Reset your Restore Points as Combofix uninstall will do that automatically for you.

Recommendations
Below are some recommendations to lower your chances of (re)infection.
  1. Install and maintain an outbound firewall
  2. Install Spyware Blaster and update it regularly
If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
  3. Install the MVPs hosts file, and update it regularly
You can use the HostMan host file manager to do this automaticly if you wish.
For more information on the hosts file, and what it can do for you, you can view the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  4. Install an Anti-Spyware program, and update it regularly
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
  5. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
    1. Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
    2. Click "All Programs"
    3. Click "Windows Update"
    4. On the left, choose "Change Settings"
    5. Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
    6. Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
    7. Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
    8. Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
    9. Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
  6. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on your machine.
  7. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variants every single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
