I have a deer cam that I just take the SD card out of and put in my internal card reader in my laptop. It used to come up on the screen when you inserted it you know make the sound and ask you what you want to do. Transfer images or whatever. Now it just makes the should and don't promp me with anything I have to go to my computer and click on it to pull it up and transfer them that way. How can I get it back the way it was to pop up and give me options when I insert the card. It still makes the sound but no pop up. Thanks!

I plugged our digital camera up to my laptop and it came up as normal. Windows pic and fax viewer poped up and I click on transfer to my pictures and bam. Thats how my sd card slot did work on my laptop but not any more for some reason. I'm running windows xp professional.

I use ccleaner and do the registry to on it. Could this have erased something that it shouldn't to make my pop up not come up when I insert the SD card?

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:

• Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.

The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.

• Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.

• Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.

• Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.

• The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

Go to Start Menu > Default Programs > Change Autoplay settings > under Pictures, change it to the default setting you wish to have (open, ask, etc..) > Save

By the way, I'd love to see those trail cam photos when you get a chance (Photos sub-forum).

Oops...sorry...didn't notice you're running XP. My bad.

Try this instead:

Open My Computer > Right-click your SD card > Properties > Autoplay tab

That should get you where you need to go.

Err...just saw your last post...try this:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > look for Shell Hardware Detection...make sure it is set to Automatic. Restart it to be sure it is running.

Take out, then reinsert your SD card to see if it works now.

I can understand your frustration. Give me a little time to come up with some other possible solutions.

In the mean time, at least you can access the SD card and retrieve the pictures. It just won't Autoplay for you. So it's not a completely debilitating problem. Just irritating.

Okay, I may have had an epiphany on this.

Insert your SD card and open it in My Computer. Tools > Folder Options > View tab > dot Show hidden files, folders, and drives and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) > OK > Apply

Now, look for a folder or file named autorun.inf. If you see one in the root of the drive, delete it. (if you don't see it, then there isn't one there, and my theory holds no water)

"Safely Remove" your SD card and reinsert it. Do you get the Autorun window now?
