I've tried fixing suggested files, then going into safe mode and removing all temp files, scanning with Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, (& tried using LSPFix but it doesn't seem to do anything) - but when I go back into normal mode it still comes back. Please help!

Thanks.

Hello dave2y2k and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Open Notepad and Copy/Paste the contents of the quote box below into the new document:

Const title = "Service Removal Tool"

Set oWS = CreateObject("Wscript.Shell")
sService = inputbox("Removing Service:",title,"Network Security Service (NSS)")

If sService = "" then
msgbox "Script halted. No changes were made.", vbInformation, title
wscript.quit
End If

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")
Set colListOfServices = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
("Select * from Win32_Service Where Name = '" & sService & "' or displayName = '" & sService & "'")
If colListOfServices.count > 0 Then
For Each objService In colListOfServices
objService.StopService()
wscript.Sleep 5000
objService.ChangeStartMode("Disabled")
wscript.Sleep 2000
objService.Delete()
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service has been removed or marked for deletion.", vbInformation, title
Next
Else
Msgbox "The " & sService & " service was not found.", vbInformation, title
End If

Save the file to your desktop as remsvc.vbs and close Notepad.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfsmh.dll/sp.html#44768

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\javaki32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SSMS.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\service.exe (do not confuse this with the legitimate services.exe file)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\kfsmh.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\apppb32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nttt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\crdt.dll
C:\WINDOWS\apikb32.dll
C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\ <--folder

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Locate the remsvc.vbs file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it. Click the Ok button and wait for a messge box saying the service has been removed or marked for deletion.

Rerun the remsvc.vbs file for each of the following services. Replace the service name in the editbox with the ones listed below before clicking the Ok button:COM+ System Service
NETDDEC

Step #6

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Bitdefender <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean'.
RAV <<<Add a check by 'Autoclean', leave everything else as is.
eTrust <<<'Cure' whatever is found, then delete if unsuccessful
Housecall <<<Put on 'Autoclean' and delete what it can't clean.
Panda ActiveScan <<<Accept default settings
If there are any files that cannot be automatically disinfected or quarantined then you will need to delete them manually.

Step #8

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 then follow these download and setup instructions: Ad-Aware SE Setup. Otherwise, just check for updates.

Start Ad-aware SE, click the Start button and choose Perform Full System Scan. Click the Next button and wait for the scan to complete. If anything was found, right-click on the list and choose Select All and remove all it finds.

Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi, unfortunatly it did work - it seemed to clear most of the problem for about 10 minutes but then it came back again. I followed the steps above - the only problem part was the remsvc.vbs file when it's run it comes up with an error message "critical error". Also the LSPFix.exe didn't actually do anything as far as i could tell - but i think that might be because there wasn't anything for it to fix after the other programs had been run. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

Thanks,

Dave2y2k.

Hi dave2y2k. Hmmm. What was LSPFix being run for? That is a specialized fix for LSP errors but I don't see any problems with that in the log.

In any case, It looks like MsConfig is active and we need to turn that off. This can hide malware from us when we are performing a fix, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on Start, then Run, and type msconfig and then press Enter. When the window opens you should be on the General tab. Click on the Normal Startup item. Then press ok until you are out of the program. It will ask you to reboot so reboot normally.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it here as a reply. I will review it when it comes in.

Hi dave2y2k. Ok, let's go through this again.

Remove these installed programs (if found) using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
180search assistant
AdTools Service
altnet
BullsEye Network
CMEII
DeskAd Service
Internet Optimizer
Kazaa Lite Resurrection
NetPumper
Media Access
P2P Networking

Now we need to remove a service.

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Helper service and double-click on it to open the Properties dialog.
  • Click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Repeat the above steps for the following additional services:
    • COM+ System Service
      Network DDE Connections
      SmartFinder Uninstall
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste each line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key after each one:
    • sc delete 11F#`I
      sc delete COM+ System Service
      sc delete NETDDEC
      sc delete SmartFinder_Uninstall
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Physically disconnect the computer from the internet (remove the cable, phoneline, ethernet cable etc).

Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\hwdgr.dll/sp.html#44768

  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\hwdgr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\javabx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\crsq32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ypib.exe
C:\WINDOWS\sysfa32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\ipva.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iegd32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\crsf32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\crdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\cxtpls_loader.exe
C:\WINDOWS\atlfz32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\d3yl32.exe
c:\windows\temp\ (do not delete this folder but delete all files/folders inside it)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SSMS.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\service.exe
c:\windows\system32\ycywea.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\f9t9u3it.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crzw32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winpq32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\crjl.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\version.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\smss32.exe
c:\windows\system32\ueyjiap.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\P2P Networking\ <--folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nttt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\iejr32.exe
c:\windows\system32\hvzkqtu.exe
c:\windows\system32\nradio.exe
c:\windows\system32\rzbxfei.exe
c:\windows\system32\lbfdzn.exe
C:\Program Files\Common files\updater\ <--folder
c:\program files\180search assistant\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\NetPumper\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Media Access\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\Kazaa Lite Resurrection\ <--folder

c:\program files\altnet\ <--folder
C:\Program Files\AdTools Service\ <--folder
c:\temp\ <--folder
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Dave\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\ (do not delete this folder but delete all files/folders inside it)

Now search for these files and delete all instances. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.xpsp2.exe
ctlpdlxx.exe

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Hi dave2y2k. that log looks clean. Good job! How are things running? Any more problems?

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
  • CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You already have a good firewall and a good antivirus application intalled and running. It is important to have both to protect your system, and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit Microsoft Windows Update monthly. Microsoft puts out new updates on the 2nd Tuesday of every month so be sure to check regularly.

And to keep your system clean be aware of what emails you open, what websites you visit, and update and run these free malware scanners once a week:To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
